Joel 2:1–2 — The New International Version (NIV)

Blow the trumpet in Zion;

sound the alarm on my holy hill.

Let all who live in the land tremble,

for the day of the Lord is coming.

It is close at hand—

a day of darkness and gloom,

a day of clouds and blackness.

Like dawn spreading across the mountains

a large and mighty army comes,

such as never was in ancient times

nor ever will be in ages to come.

Joel 2:1–2 — English Standard Version (ESV)

Blow a trumpet in Zion;

sound an alarm on my holy mountain!

Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,

for the day of the Lord is coming; it is near,

a day of darkness and gloom,

a day of clouds and thick darkness!

Like blackness there is spread upon the mountains

a great and powerful people;

their like has never been before,

nor will be again after them

through the years of all generations.

Joel 2:1–2 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain:

Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble:

For the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand;

A day of darkness and of gloominess,

A day of clouds and of thick darkness,

As the morning spread upon the mountains:

A great people and a strong;

There hath not been ever the like,

Neither shall be any more after it,

Even to the years of many generations.

Joel 2:1–2 — New Living Translation (NLT)

Sound the trumpet in Jerusalem!

Raise the alarm on my holy mountain!

Let everyone tremble in fear

because the day of the Lord is upon us.

It is a day of darkness and gloom,

a day of thick clouds and deep blackness.

Suddenly, like dawn spreading across the mountains,

a great and mighty army appears.

Nothing like it has been seen before

or will ever be seen again.

Joel 2:1–2 — New Century Version (NCV)

Blow the trumpet in Jerusalem;

shout a warning on my holy mountain.

Let all the people who live in the land shake with fear,

because the Lord’s day of judging is coming;

it is near.

It will be a dark, gloomy day,

cloudy and black.

Like the light at sunrise,

a great and powerful army will spread over the mountains.

There has never been anything like it before,

and there will never be anything like it again.

Joel 2:1–2 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain; let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of Jehovah cometh, for it is nigh at hand; a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, as the dawn spread upon the mountains; a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after them, even to the years of many generations.

Joel 2:1–2 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain; let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of Jehovah cometh, for it is at hand; a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and gross darkness, as the dawn spread upon the mountains; —a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after them, to the years of generations and generations.

Joel 2:1–2 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

Blow the ram’s horn in Zion.

Sound the alarm on my holy mountain.

Everyone who lives in the land should tremble,

because the day of the Lord is coming.

Certainly, it is near.

It is a day of darkness and gloom,

a day of clouds and overcast skies.

A large and mighty army

will spread over the mountains like the dawn.

Nothing like this has ever happened.

Nothing like this will ever happen again.

Joel 2:1–2 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Blow the horn in Zion;

sound the alarm on My holy mountain!

Let all the residents of the land tremble,

for the Day of the Lord is coming;

in fact, it is near—

a day of darkness and gloom,

a day of clouds and dense overcast,

like the dawn spreading over the mountains;

a great and strong people appears,

such as never existed in ages past

and never will again

in all the generations to come.

Joel 2:1–2 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Blow the trumpet in Zion;

sound the alarm on my holy mountain!

Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,

for the day of the Lord is coming, it is near—

a day of darkness and gloom,

a day of clouds and thick darkness!

Like blackness spread upon the mountains

a great and powerful army comes;

their like has never been from of old,

nor will be again after them

in ages to come.

Joel 2:1–2 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Blow the trumpet in Zion,

and sound the alarm on my holy mountain!

Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,

for the day of Yahweh is coming

it is indeed near.

A day of darkness and gloom,

a day of cloud and thick darkness,

like the dawn spreads on the mountains,

a great and strong army!

There has been nothing like it from old,

and after it nothing will be again for generations to come.

Joel 2:1–2 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

Priests, blow the trumpets in Zion.

Give a warning on my holy mountain.

Let everyone who lives in the land tremble with fear.

The day of the Lord is coming.

It is very near.

That day will be dark and sad.

It will be black and cloudy.

A huge army of locusts is coming.

They will spread across the mountains

like the sun when it rises.

There has never been an army like it.

And there will never be another

for all time to come.

Joel 2:1–2 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

Blow a trumpet in Zion,

And sound an alarm on My holy mountain!

Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,

For the day of the Lord is coming;

Surely it is near,

A day of darkness and gloom,

A day of clouds and thick darkness.

As the dawn is spread over the mountains,

So there is a great and mighty people;

There has never been anything like it,

Nor will there be again after it

To the years of many generations.
