Isaiah 22:15–17

15 This is what the Lord, the Lord Almighty, says:

“Go, say to this steward,

to Shebna the palace administrator:

16 What are you doing here and who gave you permission

to cut out a grave for yourself here,

hewing your grave on the height

and chiseling your resting place in the rock?

17 “Beware, the Lord is about to take firm hold of you

and hurl you away, you mighty man.

15 Thus says the Lord God of hosts, “Come, go to this steward, to Shebna, who is over the household, and say to him: 16 What have you to do here, and whom have you here, that you have cut out here a tomb for yourself, you who cut out a tomb on the height and carve a dwelling for yourself in the rock? 17 Behold, the Lord will hurl you away violently, O you strong man. He will seize firm hold on you

15 Thus saith the Lord God of hosts, Go, get thee unto this treasurer, even unto Shebna, which is over the house, and say,

16 What hast thou here? and whom hast thou here,

That thou hast hewed thee out a sepulchre here,

As he that heweth him out a sepulchre on high,

And that graveth an habitation for himself in a rock?

17 Behold, the Lord will carry thee away with a mighty captivity,

And will surely cover thee.

15 This is what the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, said to me: “Confront Shebna, the palace administrator, and give him this message:

16 “Who do you think you are,

and what are you doing here,

building a beautiful tomb for yourself—

a monument high up in the rock?

17 For the Lord is about to hurl you away, mighty man.

He is going to grab you,

15 This is what the Lord God All-Powerful says:

“Go to this servant Shebna,

the manager of the palace.

16 Say to him, ‘What are you doing here?

Who said you could cut out a tomb for your self here?

Why are you preparing your tomb in a high place?

Why are you carving out a tomb from the rock?

17 Look, mighty one! The Lord will throw you away.

He will take firm hold of you

15 Thus saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, Go, get thee unto this treasurer, even unto Shebna, who is over the house, and say, 16 What doest thou here? and whom hast thou here, that thou hast hewed thee out here a sepulchre? hewing him out a sepulchre on high, graving a habitation for himself in the rock! 17 Behold, Jehovah, like a strong man, will hurl thee away violently; yea, he will wrap thee up closely.

15 Thus saith the Lord Jehovah of hosts: Go, get thee in unto this steward, unto Shebna, who is over the house, and say, 16 What hast thou here? and whom hast thou here, that thou hast hewn thee out a sepulchre here, as he that heweth out his sepulchre on high, cutting out in the rock a habitation for himself? 17 Behold, Jehovah will hurl thee with the force of a mighty man, and will cover thee entirely.

15 This is what the Almighty Lord of Armies says: 

Go to Shebna, the man in charge of the palace, and say ⸤to him⸥, 

16 “What are you doing here? 

What right do you have to dig a tomb for yourself? 

What right do you have to cut it out in a prominent place? 

What right do you have to carve out 

a resting place for yourself in the rock? 

17 Look, mighty man! 

The Lord will throw you out. 

He will grab you. 

15 The Lord God of Hosts said: “Go to Shebna, that steward who is in charge of the palace, and say to him: 16 What are you doing here? Who authorized you to carve out a tomb for yourself here, carving your tomb on the height and cutting a crypt for yourself out of rock? 17 Look, you strong man! The Lord is about to shake you violently. He will take hold of you,

15 Thus says the Lord God of hosts: “Go to the steward Shebna, who is master of the household, and say to him: 16 What right do you have here? Who are your relatives here, that you have cut out a tomb here for yourself, cutting a tomb on the height and carving a habitation for yourself in the rock? 17 The Lord is about to hurl you away violently, my fellow. He will seize firm hold on you,

15 The Lord, Yahweh of hosts, says this:

“Go! Go to this steward, to Shebna,

who is over the house:

16 ‘What business do you have here,

and who do you have here,

that you have cut a grave cutting here for yourself,

carving his grave on the height,

a dwelling place for him in the rock?

17 Look! Yahweh is about to really hurl you, man!

And he is about to grasp you firmly;

15 The Lord who rules over all speaks. The Lord says,

“Go. Speak to the head servant Shebna.

He is in charge of the palace. Tell him,

16 ‘What are you doing here outside the city?

Who allowed you to cut out a tomb for yourself here?

Who said you could carve out your grave on the hillside?

Who allowed you to cut out your resting place in the rock?

17 “ ‘Watch out, you mighty man!

The Lord is about to grab hold of you.

He is about to throw you away.

15 Thus says the Lord God of hosts,

“Come, go to this steward,

To Shebna, who is in charge of the royal household,

16 ‘What right do you have here,

And whom do you have here,

That you have hewn a tomb for yourself here,

You who hew a tomb on the height,

You who carve a resting place for yourself in the rock?

17 ‘Behold, the Lord is about to hurl you headlong, O man.

And He is about to grasp you firmly
