Genesis 11:1–6
11 Now the whole earth had one language and one 1speech. 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land aof Shinar, and they dwelt there. 3 Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and 2bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. 4 And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower bwhose top is in the heavens; let us make a cname for ourselves, lest we dbe scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
5 eBut the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. 6 And the Lord said, “Indeed fthe people are one and they all have gone language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they hpropose to do will be withheld from them.

1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.
3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”
5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.

This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world.”
5 But the Lord came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building. 6 “Look!” he said. “The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them!
