Ecclesiastes 9:5–8

5 For the living know that they will die,

but the dead know nothing;

they have no further reward,

and even their name is forgotten.

6 Their love, their hate

and their jealousy have long since vanished;

never again will they have a part

in anything that happens under the sun.

7 Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do. 8 Always be clothed in white, and always anoint your head with oil.

5 For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. 6 Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished, and forever they have no more share in all that is done under the sun.

7 Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has already approved what you do.

8 Let your garments be always white. Let not oil be lacking on your head.

7 Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works. 8 Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.

5 The living at least know they will die, but the dead know nothing. They have no further reward, nor are they remembered. 6 Whatever they did in their lifetime—loving, hating, envying—is all long gone. They no longer play a part in anything here on earth. 7 So go ahead. Eat your food with joy, and drink your wine with a happy heart, for God approves of this! 8 Wear fine clothes, with a splash of cologne!

5 The living know they will die,

Dead people have no more reward,

and people forget them.

6 After people are dead,

they can no longer love or hate or envy.

They will never again share

in what happens here on earth.

7 So go eat your food and enjoy it;

drink your wine and be happy,

because that is what God wants you to do.

8 Put on nice clothes

and make yourself look good.

5 People who are still alive know they’ll die.

But those who have died don’t know anything.

They don’t receive any more rewards.

And they are soon forgotten.

6 Their love, hate and jealousy disappear.

They will never share again

in anything that happens on earth.

7 Go and enjoy your food. Be joyful as you drink your wine. Now is the time God favors what you do. 8 Always wear white clothes to show you are happy. Anoint your head with olive oil.
