The Lord has sworn by himself, the Pride of Jacob: “I will never forget anything they have done.

“Will not the land tremble for this,

and all who live in it mourn?

The whole land will rise like the Nile;

it will be stirred up and then sink

like the river of Egypt.

“In that day,” declares the Sovereign Lord,

“I will make the sun go down at noon

and darken the earth in broad daylight.

10 I will turn your religious festivals into mourning

and all your singing into weeping.

I will make all of you wear sackcloth

and shave your heads.

I will make that time like mourning for an only son

and the end of it like a bitter day.

and be tossed about and sink again, like the Nile of Egypt?”

“And on that day,” declares the Lord God,

“I will make the sun go down at noon

and darken the earth in broad daylight.

10 I will turn your feasts into mourning

and all your songs into lamentation;

I will bring sackcloth on every waist

and baldness on every head;

I will make it like the mourning for an only son

and the end of it like a bitter day.

Amos 8:7–10 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

The Lord hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob,

Surely I will never forget any of their works.

Shall not the land tremble for this,

And every one mourn that dwelleth therein?

And it shall rise up wholly as a flood;

And it shall be cast out and drowned, as by the flood of Egypt.

And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord God,

That I will cause the sun to go down at noon,

And I will darken the earth in the clear day:

10 And I will turn your feasts into mourning,

And all your songs into lamentation;

And I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins,

And baldness upon every head;

And I will make it as the mourning of an only son,

And the end thereof as a bitter day.

Amos 8:7–10 — New Living Translation (NLT)

Now the Lord has sworn this oath

by his own name, the Pride of Israel:

“I will never forget

the wicked things you have done!

The earth will tremble for your deeds,

and everyone will mourn.

The ground will rise like the Nile River at floodtime;

it will heave up, then sink again.

“In that day,” says the Sovereign Lord,

“I will make the sun go down at noon

and darken the earth while it is still day.

10 I will turn your celebrations into times of mourning

and your singing into weeping.

You will wear funeral clothes

and shave your heads to show your sorrow—

as if your only son had died.

How very bitter that day will be!

Amos 8:7–10 — New Century Version (NCV)

The Lord has sworn by his name, the Pride of Jacob, “I will never forget everything that these people did.

The whole land will shake because of it,

and everyone who lives in the land will cry for those who died.

The whole land will rise like the Nile;

it will be shaken, and then it will fall

like the Nile River in Egypt.”

The Lord God says:

“At that time I will cause the sun to go down at noon

and make the earth dark on a bright day.

10 I will change your festivals into days of crying for the dead,

and all your songs will become songs of sadness.

I will make all of you wear rough cloth to show your sadness;

I will make you shave your heads as well.

I will make it like a time of crying for the death of an only son,

and its end like the end of an awful day.”

Amos 8:7–10 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Jehovah hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works. Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwelleth therein? yea, it shall rise up wholly like the River; and it shall be troubled and sink again, like the River of Egypt. And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord Jehovah, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day. 10 And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning for an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day.

Amos 8:7–10 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Jehovah hath sworn by the glory of Jacob, Certainly I will never forget any of their works. Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwelleth therein? And it shall wholly rise up like the Nile; and it shall surge and sink down, as the river of Egypt. And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord Jehovah, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the land in the clear day. 10 And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning for an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day.

Amos 8:7–10 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

The Lord has sworn an oath by Jacob’s pride:

“I will never forget anything that they have done.”

The land will tremble because of this.

Everyone who lives in it will mourn.

The entire land will rise like the Nile,

be tossed about, and then sink like Egypt’s river.

On that day, declares the Almighty Lord

I will make the sun go down at noon

and darken the earth in broad daylight.

10 I will turn your festivals into funerals

and all your songs into funeral songs.

I will put sackcloth around everyone’s waist

and shave everyone’s head.

I will make that day seem like a funeral for an only child,

and its end will be bitter.

Amos 8:7–10 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

The Lord has sworn by the Pride of Jacob:

I will never forget all their deeds.

Because of this, won’t the land quake

and all who dwell in it mourn?

All of it will rise like the Nile;

it will surge and then subside

like the Nile in Egypt.

And in that day—

this is the declaration of the Lord God

I will make the sun go down at noon;

I will darken the land in the daytime.

10 I will turn your feasts into mourning

and all your songs into lamentation;

I will cause everyone to wear sackcloth

and every head to be shaved.

I will make that grief

like mourning for an only son

and its outcome like a bitter day.

On that day, says the Lord God,

I will make the sun go down at noon,

and darken the earth in broad daylight.

10 I will turn your feasts into mourning,

and all your songs into lamentation;

I will bring sackcloth on all loins,

and baldness on every head;

I will make it like the mourning for an only son,

and the end of it like a bitter day.

Amos 8:7–10 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Yahweh has sworn by the pride of Jacob, “Surely I will never forget any of their deeds! On account of this, will not the land tremble and will not every living thing in it mourn? And all of it will rise like the Nile and it will be tossed about and subside like the Nile of Egypt. And then in that day,” declares my Lord Yahweh, “I will make the sun go down at noon and I will darken the land on a day of light. 10 And I will turn your feasts into mourning and all of your songs into lament, and I will put sackcloth on all loins and baldness on every head. And I will make it like the mourning for an only child, and its end like a bitter day.

Amos 8:7–10 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

People of Jacob, you are proud that the Lord is your God. But he has taken an oath in his own name. He says, “I will never forget anything Israel has done.

“The land will tremble because of what will happen.

Everyone who lives in it will sob.

So the whole land will rise like the Nile River.

It will be stirred up.

Then it will settle back down again

like that river in Egypt.”

The Lord and King announces,

“At that time I will make the sun go down at noon.

The earth will become dark in the middle of the day.

10 I will turn your holy feasts into times for sobbing.

I will turn all of your songs into crying.

You will have to wear black clothes.

You will shave your heads.

I will make you sob as if your only son had died.

The end of that time will be like a bitter day.”

Amos 8:7–10 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob,

Indeed, I will never forget any of their deeds.

Because of this will not the land quake

And everyone who dwells in it mourn?

Indeed, all of it will rise up like the Nile,

And it will be tossed about

And subside like the Nile of Egypt.

“It will come about in that day,” declares the Lord God,

“That I will make the sun go down at noon

And make the earth dark in broad daylight.

10 “Then I will turn your festivals into mourning

And all your songs into lamentation;

And I will bring sackcloth on everyone’s loins

And baldness on every head.

And I will make it like a time of mourning for an only son,

And the end of it will be like a bitter day.
