Amos 1:1–5

1 The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa—the vision he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel.

2 He said:

“The Lord roars from Zion

and thunders from Jerusalem;

the pastures of the shepherds dry up,

and the top of Carmel withers.”

3 This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Damascus,

even for four, I will not relent.

Because she threshed Gilead

with sledges having iron teeth,

4 I will send fire on the house of Hazael

that will consume the fortresses of Ben-Hadad.

5 I will break down the gate of Damascus;

I will destroy the king who is in the Valley of Aven

and the one who holds the scepter in Beth Eden.

The people of Aram will go into exile to Kir,”

says the Lord.

2 And he said:

“The Lord roars from Zion

and utters his voice from Jerusalem;

the pastures of the shepherds mourn,

and the top of Carmel withers.”

3 Thus says the Lord:

“For three transgressions of Damascus,

and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,

because they have threshed Gilead

with threshing sledges of iron.

4 So I will send a fire upon the house of Hazael,

and it shall devour the strongholds of Ben-hadad.

5 I will break the gate-bar of Damascus,

and cut off the inhabitants from the Valley of Aven,

and him who holds the scepter from Beth-eden;

and the people of Syria shall go into exile to Kir,”

says the Lord.

1 The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake. 2 And he said,

The Lord will roar from Zion,

And utter his voice from Jerusalem;

And the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn,

And the top of Carmel shall wither.

3 Thus saith the Lord;

For three transgressions of Damascus,

And for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof;

Because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron:

4 But I will send a fire into the house of Hazael,

Which shall devour the palaces of Ben-hadad.

5 I will break also the bar of Damascus,

And cut off the inhabitant from the plain of Aven,

And him that holdeth the sceptre from the house of Eden:

And the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith the Lord.

1 This message was given to Amos, a shepherd from the town of Tekoa in Judah. He received this message in visions two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam II, the son of Jehoash, was king of Israel.

2 This is what he saw and heard:

“The Lord’s voice will roar from Zion

and thunder from Jerusalem!

The lush pastures of the shepherds will dry up;

the grass on Mount Carmel will wither and die.”

3 This is what the Lord says:

“The people of Damascus have sinned again and again,

and I will not let them go unpunished!

They beat down my people in Gilead

as grain is threshed with iron sledges.

4 So I will send down fire on King Hazael’s palace,

and the fortresses of King Ben-hadad will be destroyed.

5 I will break down the gates of Damascus

and slaughter the people in the valley of Aven.

I will destroy the ruler in Beth-eden,

and the people of Aram will go as captives to Kir,”

says the Lord.

1 These are the words of Amos, one of the shepherds from the town of Tekoa. He saw this vision about Israel two years before the earthquake. It was at the time Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel.

2 Amos said,

“The Lord will roar from Jerusalem;

he will send his voice from Jerusalem.

The pastures of the shepherds will become dry,

and even the top of Mount Carmel will dry up.”

3 This is what the Lord says:

“For the many crimes of Damascus,

I will punish them.

They drove over the people of Gilead

with threshing boards that had iron teeth.

4 So I will send fire upon the house of Hazael

that will destroy the strong towers of Ben-Hadad.

5 I will break down the bar of the gate to Damascus

and destroy the king who is in the Valley of Aven,

as well as the leader of Beth Eden.

The people of Aram will be taken captive to the country of Kir,” says the Lord.

1 These are the words of Amos, one of the sheep farmers from Tekoa. He saw ⸤a vision⸥ about Israel during the reigns of Judah’s King Uzziah and Israel’s King Jeroboam, son of Joash. This happened two years before the earthquake. 

2 He said: 

The Lord roars from Zion, 

and his voice thunders from Jerusalem. 

The pastures of the shepherds are turning brown, 

and the top of ⸤Mount⸥ Carmel is dried up. 

3 This is what the Lord says: 

Because Damascus has committed three crimes, and now a fourth crime, 

I will not change my plans. 

The Arameans have crushed ⸤the people of⸥ Gilead 

with iron-spiked threshingsledges. 

4 I will send a fire on the house of Hazael 

and burn down the palaces of Ben Hadad. 

5 I will break the bars ⸤on the gates⸥ of Damascus. 

I will cut off those living in Aven Valley 

and the one who holds the scepter in Beth Eden. 

The people of Aram will go into captivity at Kir. 

The Lord has said this. 

1 The words of Amos, who was one of the sheep breeders from Tekoa —what he saw regarding Israel in the days of Uzziah, king of Judah, and Jeroboam son of Jehoash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

2 He said:

The Lord roars from Zion

and raises His voice from Jerusalem;

the pastures of the shepherds mourn,

and the summit of Carmel withers.

3 The Lord says:

I will not relent from punishing Damascus

for three crimes, even four,

because they threshed Gilead with iron sledges.

4 Therefore, I will send fire against Hazael’s palace,

and it will consume Ben-hadad’s citadels.

5 I will break down the gates of Damascus.

I will cut off the ruler from the Valley of Aven,

and the one who wields the scepter from Beth-eden.

The people of Aram will be exiled to Kir.

The Lord has spoken.

The Lord roars from Zion

2 And he said, “Yahweh roars from Zion and he utters his voice from Jerusalem; the pastures of the shepherds wither and the top of Carmel dries up.” 3 Thus says Yahweh, “For three transgressions of Damascus and for four I will not revoke the punishment, because they threshed Gilead with threshing sledges of iron! 4 So I will send fire against Hazael’s house and it will consume the citadel fortresses of Ben-Hadad. 5 I will break the gate bars of Damascus and I will cut off the inhabitants from the Valley of Aven and the one who takes hold of the scepter of Beth Eden, and the people of Aram will go into exile to Kir,” says Yahweh.

1 These are the words of Amos. He was a shepherd from the town of Tekoa. Here is the vision he saw concerning Israel. It came to him two years before the earthquake. At that time Uzziah was king of Judah. Jeroboam was king of Israel. He was the son of Jehoash. Here are the words of Amos.

2 I said,

“The Lord roars like a lion from Jerusalem.

His voice sounds like thunder from Zion.

The grasslands of the shepherds turn brown.

The top of Mount Carmel dries up.”

3 The Lord says,

“The people of Damascus have sinned again and again.

So I will punish them.

They used threshing sleds with iron teeth

to crush Gilead’s people.

4 So I will send fire to destroy the palace of King Hazael.

It will burn up the forts of his son Ben-Hadad.

5 I will break down the city gate of Damascus.

I will cut off the king

who lives in the Valley of Aven.

He holds the ruler’s rod in Beth Eden.

The people of Aram will be taken away to Kir as prisoners,”

says the Lord.

1 The words of Amos, who was among the sheepherders from Tekoa, which he envisioned in visions concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

2 He said,

“The Lord roars from Zion

And from Jerusalem He utters His voice;

And the shepherds’ pasture grounds mourn,

And the summit of Carmel dries up.”

3 Thus says the Lord,

“For three transgressions of Damascus and for four

I will not revoke its punishment,

Because they threshed Gilead with implements of sharp iron.

4 “So I will send fire upon the house of Hazael

And it will consume the citadels of Ben-hadad.

5 “I will also break the gate bar of Damascus,

And cut off the inhabitant from the valley of Aven,

And him who holds the scepter, from Beth-eden;

So the people of Aram will go exiled to Kir,”

Says the Lord.
