Mark 12:28–15:20

Question of the Greatest Commandment

Matt. 22:34–40

28 pThen one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, 9perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him, “Which is the 1first commandment of all?”

29 Jesus answered him, The 2first of all the commandments is: qHear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall rlove the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ 3This is the first commandment. 31 And the second, like it, is this: sYou shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than tthese.”

32 So the scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one God, uand there is no other but He. 33 And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, 4with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, vis more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

34 Now when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, He said to him, You are not far from the kingdom of God.”

wBut after that no one dared question Him.

Jesus Questions the Leaders

Matt. 22:41–45; Luke 20:41–44

35 xThen Jesus answered and said, while He taught in the temple, How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David? 36 For David himself said yby the Holy Spirit:

zThe Lord said to my Lord,

Sit at My right hand,

Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’

37 Therefore David himself calls Him Lord; how is He then his aSon?”

And the common people heard Him gladly.

Jesus Condemns the Leaders

Matt. 23:1–14; Luke 20:45–21:4

38 Then bHe said to them in His teaching, c Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, dlove greetings in the marketplaces, 39 the ebest seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, 40 fwho devour widowshouses, and 5for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”

41 gNow Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money hinto the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. 42 Then one poor widow came and threw in two 6mites, which make a 7quadrans. 43 So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, Assuredly, I say to you that ithis poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; 44 for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, jher whole livelihood.”

Questions from the Disciples

Matt. 24:1–3; Luke 21:5–7

13 Then aas He went out of the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!

And Jesus answered and said to him, Do you see these great buildings? bNot one stone shall be left upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”

Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, cPeter, dJames, eJohn, and fAndrew asked Him privately, g“Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign when all these things will be fulfilled?”

The Tribulation

Matt. 24:4–26; Luke 21:8–24

And Jesus, answering them, began to say: hTake heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying,I am He,and will deceive many. But when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be troubled; for such things must happen, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and ikingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines 1and troubles. jThese are the beginnings of 2sorrows.

But kwatch out for yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils, and you will be beaten in the synagogues. You will 3be brought before rulers and kings for My sake, for a testimony to them. 10 And lthe gospel must first be preached to all the nations. 11 mBut when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, 4or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, nbut the Holy Spirit. 12 Now obrother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. 13 pAnd you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But qhe who 5endures to the end shall be saved.

14 rSo when you see the sabomination of desolation,’ 6spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not (let the reader understand), then tlet those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15 Let him who is on the housetop not go down into the house, nor enter to take anything out of his house. 16 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. 17 uBut woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 18 And pray that your flight may not be in winter. 19 vFor in those days there will be tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the creation which God created until this time, nor ever shall be. 20 And unless the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake, whom He chose, He shortened the days.

21 wThen if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or, ‘Look, He is there!’ do not believe it. 22 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show signs and xwonders to deceive, if possible, even the 7elect. 23 But ytake heed; see, I have told you all things beforehand.

The Second Coming

Matt. 24:29–31; Luke 21:25–28

24 z But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; 25 the stars of heaven will fall, and the powers in the heavens will be ashaken. 26 bThen they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. 27 And then He will send His angels, and gather together His 8elect from the four winds, from the farthest part of earth to the farthest part of heaven.

Parable of the Fig Tree

Matt. 24:32–35

28 cNow learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So you also, when you see these things happening, know that 9it is nearat the doors! 30 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but dMy words will by no means pass away.

Exhortation to Watch

Matt. 24:36–51; Luke 21:34–36

32 But of that day and hour eno one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the fFather. 33 gTake heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is. 34 hIt is like a man going to a far country, who left his house and gave iauthority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch. 35 jWatch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is comingin the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning36 lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping. 37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!”

Leaders Plot to Kill Jesus

Matt. 26:1–5; Luke 22:1, 2

14 After atwo days it was the Passover and bthe Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take Him by 1trickery and put Him to death. But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar of the people.”

Mary Anoints Jesus

Matt. 26:6–13; John 12:2–8

cAnd being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly 2oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and poured it on His head. But there were some who were indignant among themselves, and said, “Why was this fragrant oil wasted? For it might have been sold for more than three hundred ddenarii and given to the poor.” And they ecriticized 3her sharply.

But Jesus said, Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me. fFor you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good; gbut Me you do not have always. She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial. Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is hpreached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”

Judas Plans to Betray Jesus

Matt. 26:14; Luke 22:3–6

10 iThen Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Him to them. 11 And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. So he sought how he might conveniently betray Him.

The Passover is Prepared

Matt. 26:17–19; Luke 22:7–13

12 jNow on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they 4killed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?”

13 And He sent out two of His disciples and said to them, Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him. 14 Wherever he goes in, say to the master of the house,The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 15 Then he will show you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; there make ready for us.”

16 So His disciples went out, and came into the city, and found it just as He had said to them; and they prepared the Passover.

The Passover is Celebrated

Matt. 26:20–25; Luke 22:14–16; John 13:21–30

17 kIn the evening He came with the twelve. 18 Now as they sat and ate, Jesus said, Assuredly, I say to you, lone of you who eats with Me will betray Me.”

19 And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to Him one by one, “Is it I?” 5And another said,Is it I?”

20 He answered and said to them, It is one of the twelve, who dips with Me in the dish. 21 mThe Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had never been born.”

The Lord’s Supper is Instituted

Matt. 26:26–29; Luke 22:17–23

22 nAnd as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, Take, 6eat; this is My obody.”

23 Then He took the cup, and when He had given
