Lamentations 3:1–8 — The New International Version (NIV)

I am the man who has seen affliction

by the rod of the Lord’s wrath.

He has driven me away and made me walk

in darkness rather than light;

indeed, he has turned his hand against me

again and again, all day long.

He has made my skin and my flesh grow old

and has broken my bones.

He has besieged me and surrounded me

with bitterness and hardship.

He has made me dwell in darkness

like those long dead.

He has walled me in so I cannot escape;

he has weighed me down with chains.

Even when I call out or cry for help,

he shuts out my prayer.

Lamentations 3:1–8 — English Standard Version (ESV)

I am the man who has seen affliction

under the rod of his wrath;

he has driven and brought me

into darkness without any light;

surely against me he turns his hand

again and again the whole day long.

He has made my flesh and my skin waste away;

he has broken my bones;

he has besieged and enveloped me

with bitterness and tribulation;

he has made me dwell in darkness

like the dead of long ago.

He has walled me about so that I cannot escape;

he has made my chains heavy;

though I call and cry for help,

he shuts out my prayer;

Lamentations 3:1–8 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.

He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light.

Surely against me is he turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day.

My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones.

He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail.

He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old.

He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy.

Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer.

Lamentations 3:1–8 — New Living Translation (NLT)

I am the one who has seen the afflictions

that come from the rod of the Lord’s anger.

He has led me into darkness,

shutting out all light.

He has turned his hand against me

again and again, all day long.

He has made my skin and flesh grow old.

He has broken my bones.

He has besieged and surrounded me

with anguish and distress.

He has buried me in a dark place,

like those long dead.

He has walled me in, and I cannot escape.

He has bound me in heavy chains.

And though I cry and shout,

he has shut out my prayers.

Lamentations 3:1–8 — New Century Version (NCV)

I am a man who has seen the suffering

that comes from the rod of the Lord’s anger.

He led me

into darkness, not light.

He turned his hand against me

again and again, all day long.

He wore out my flesh and skin

and broke my bones.

He surrounded me with sadness

and attacked me with grief.

He made me sit in the dark,

like those who have been dead a long time.

He shut me in so I could not get out;

he put heavy chains on me.

I cry out and beg for help,

but he ignores my prayer.

Lamentations 3:1–8 — American Standard Version (ASV)

I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath. He hath led me and caused me to walk in darkness, and not in light. Surely against me he turneth his hand again and again all the day. My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones. He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail. He beat me again and again all day long.

He has made my flesh and my skin waste away.

He has broken my bones.

He has attacked me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship.

He has made me live in darkness,

like those who died a long time ago.

He has blocked me so that I can’t get out.

He has put heavy chains on me.

He has laid siege against me,

encircling me with bitterness and hardship.

like those who have been dead for ages.

He has walled me in so I cannot escape;

He has weighed me down with chains.

Even when I cry out and plead for help,

He rejects my prayer.

under the rod of his wrath.

He has driven me along, he brought

darkness and not light.

Surely he has turned his hand against me,

all day long.

He has worn out my flesh and skin,

he has broken my bones.

He has besieged and engulfed me

with bitterness and hardship.

In darkness he has let me dwell

like the dead of long ago.

He has built a wall around me, I cannot go out;

he has made my bronze fetters heavy.

Though I cry out for help,

he shuts out my prayers.

He has worn my body out.

He has broken my bones.

He has surrounded me and attacked me.

He has made me suffer bitterly.

He has made things hard for me.

He has made me live in darkness

like those who are dead and gone.

He has built walls around me. I can’t escape.

He has put heavy chains on me.

I call out and cry for help.

But he won’t listen to me when I pray.

Because of the rod of His wrath.

Repeatedly all the day.

He has caused my flesh and my skin to waste away,

He has broken my bones.

He has besieged and encompassed me with bitterness and hardship.

In dark places He has made me dwell,

Like those who have long been dead.

He has walled me in so that I cannot go out;

He has made my chain heavy.

Even when I cry out and call for help,

He shuts out my prayer.
