John 5:1–9:41

Christ Heals the Paralytic Man

5 After athis there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus bwent up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem cby the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, 1Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, 2paralyzed, 3waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, Do you want to be made well?”

The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”

Jesus said to him, dRise, take up your bed and walk.” And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked.

Christ Heals on the Sabbath

And ethat day was the Sabbath. 10 The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; fit is not lawful for you to carry your bed.”

11 He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, Take up your bed and walk.’ ”

12 Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, Take up your bed and walk’?” 13 But the one who was ghealed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, See, you have been made well. hSin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”

15 The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

16 For this reason the Jews ipersecuted Jesus, 4and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath.

Equality with God in Nature

17 But Jesus answered them, jMy Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”

18 Therefore the Jews ksought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, lmaking Himself equal with God.

Equality with God in Power

19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, Most assuredly, I say to you, mthe Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. 20 For nthe Father loves the Son, and oshows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, peven so the Son gives life to whom He will.

Equality with God in Authority

22 For the Father judges no one, but qhas committed all judgment to the Son, 23 that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. rHe who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

24 Most assuredly, I say to you, she who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, tbut has passed from death into life. 25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when uthe dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For vas the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have wlife in Himself, 27 and xhas given Him authority to execute judgment also, ybecause He is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will zhear His voice 29 aand come forthbthose who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. 30 cI can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because dI do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.

Witness of John the Baptist

31 eIf I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not 5true. 32 fThere is another who bears witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true. 33 You have sent to John, gand he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved. 35 He was the burning and hshining lamp, and iyou were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.

Witness of the Works of Christ

36 But jI have a greater witness than John’s; for kthe works which the Father has given Me to finishthe very lworks that I dobear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me.

Witness of the Father

37 And the Father Himself, who sent Me, mhas testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nnor seen His form. 38 But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe.

Witness of the Scriptures

39 oYou search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and pthese are they which testify of Me. 40 qBut you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.

41 rI do not receive honor from men. 42 But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. 43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. 44 sHow can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek tthe honor that comes from the only God? 45 Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; uthere is one who accuses youMoses, in whom you trust. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; vfor he wrote about Me. 47 But if you wdo not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

Christ Feeds 5,000

Matt. 14:13–21; Mark 6:31–44; Luke 9:11–17

6 After athese things Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of bTiberias. Then a great multitude followed Him, because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were cdiseased. 1 And Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples.

dNow the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. eThen Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to fPhilip, Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do.

Philip answered Him, g“Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.”

One of His disciples, hAndrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, ibut what are they among so many?”

10 Then Jesus said, Make the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. 11 And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them 2to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost.” 13 Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14 Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly jthe Prophet who is to come into the world.”

Christ Walks on the Water

Matt. 14:22–33; Mark 6:45–52

15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him kking, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.

16 lNow when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. 18 Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. 19 So when they had rowed about 3three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were mafraid. 20 But He said to them, nIt is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.

“I Am the Bread of Life”

22 On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except 4that one 5which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone—23 however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks—24 when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, oseeking Jesus. 25 And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?”

26 Jesus answered them and said, Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27 pDo not labor for the food which perishes, but qfor the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, rbecause God the Father has set His seal on Him.”

28 Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?”

29 Jesus answered and said to them, sThis is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”

30 Therefore they said to Him, t“What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do? 31 uOur fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, v‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”

32 Then Jesus said to them, Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but wMy Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34 xThen they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”

35 And Jesus said to them, yI am the bread of life. zHe who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never athirst. 36 bBut I said to you that you have seen Me and yet cdo not believe. 37 dAll that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and ethe one who comes to Me I will 6by no means cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, fnot to do My own will, gbut the will of Him who sent Me. 39 This is the will of the Father
