Jeremiah 49:12–16

12 This is what the Lord says: “If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, why should you go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, but must drink it. 13 I swear by myself,” declares the Lord, “that Bozrah will become a ruin and a curse, an object of horror and reproach; and all its towns will be in ruins forever.”

14 I have heard a message from the Lord;

an envoy was sent to the nations to say,

“Assemble yourselves to attack it!

Rise up for battle!”

15 “Now I will make you small among the nations,

despised by mankind.

16 The terror you inspire

and the pride of your heart have deceived you,

you who live in the clefts of the rocks,

who occupy the heights of the hill.

Though you build your nest as high as the eagle’s,

from there I will bring you down,”

declares the Lord.

12 For thus says the Lord: “If those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, will you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. 13 For I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, that Bozrah shall become a horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”

14 I have heard a message from the Lord,

and an envoy has been sent among the nations:

“Gather yourselves together and come against her,

and rise up for battle!

15 For behold, I will make you small among the nations,

despised among mankind.

16 The horror you inspire has deceived you,

and the pride of your heart,

you who live in the clefts of the rock,

who hold the height of the hill.

Though you make your nest as high as the eagle’s,

I will bring you down from there,

declares the Lord.

12 For thus saith the Lord;

Behold, they whose judgment was not to drink of the cup have assuredly drunken;

And art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished?

Thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink of it.

13 For I have sworn by myself, saith the Lord,

That Bozrah shall become a desolation,

A reproach, a waste, and a curse;

And all the cities thereof shall be perpetual wastes.

14 I have heard a rumour from the Lord,

And an ambassador is sent unto the heathen, saying,

Gather ye together,

And come against her, and rise up to the battle.

15 For, lo, I will make thee small among the heathen,

And despised among men.

16 Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart,

O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock,

That holdest the height of the hill:

Though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle,

I will bring thee down from thence, saith the Lord.

12 And this is what the Lord says: “If the innocent must suffer, how much more must you! You will not go unpunished! You must drink this cup of judgment! 13 For I have sworn by my own name,” says the Lord, “that Bozrah will become an object of horror and a heap of ruins; it will be mocked and cursed. All its towns and villages will be desolate forever.”

14 I have heard a message from the Lord

that an ambassador was sent to the nations to say,

“Form a coalition against Edom,

and prepare for battle!”

15 The Lord says to Edom,

“I will cut you down to size among the nations.

You will be despised by all.

16 You have been deceived

by the fear you inspire in others

and by your own pride.

You live in a rock fortress

and control the mountain heights.

But even if you make your nest among the peaks with the eagles,

I will bring you crashing down,”

says the Lord.

12 This is what the Lord says: “Some people did not deserve to be punished, but they had to drink from the cup of suffering anyway. People of Edom, you deserve to be punished, so you will not escape punishment. You must certainly drink from the cup of suffering.” 13 The Lord says, “I swear by my own name that the city of Bozrah will become a pile of ruins! People will be shocked by what happened there. They will insult that city and speak evil of it. And all the towns around it will become ruins forever.”

14 I have heard a message from the Lord.

A messenger has been sent among the nations, saying,

“Gather your armies to attack it!

Get ready for battle!”

15 “Soon I will make you the smallest of nations,

and you will be greatly hated by everyone.

16 Edom, you frightened other nations,

but your pride has fooled you.

You live in the hollow places of the cliff

and control the high places of the hills.

Even if you build your home as high as an eagle’s nest,

I will bring you down from there,” says the Lord.

12 For thus saith Jehovah: Behold, they to whom it pertained not to drink of the cup shall assuredly drink; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink. 13 For I have sworn by myself, saith Jehovah, that Bozrah shall become an astonishment, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all the cities thereof shall be perpetual wastes.

14 I have heard tidings from Jehovah, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, saying, Gather yourselves together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle. 15 For, behold, I have made thee small among the nations, and despised among men. 16 As for thy terribleness, the pride of thy heart hath deceived thee, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith Jehovah.

12 This is what the Lord says: If those who don’t deserve to drink from the cup still drink from it, why should you go unpunished? You won’t go unpunished. You must drink from it. 13 I take an oath on myself, declares the Lord, that Bozrah will become a pile of rubble. It will become something horrifying, ridiculed, ruined, and cursed. All its cities will lie in ruins permanently. 

14 I heard a message from the Lord. 

A messenger was sent among the nations to say, 

“Assemble, and attack Edom. 

Get ready for battle.” 

15 “Edom, I will make you the smallest of nations 

and despised among humanity. 

16 You have frightened other people. 

Your arrogance has deceived you. 

You live on rocky cliffs 

and occupy the highest places in the hills. 

Even though you build your nest as high as an eagle, 

I will bring you down from there,” declares the Lord. 

12 “For this is what the Lord says: If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, can you possibly remain unpunished? You will not remain unpunished, for you must drink it too. 13 For by Myself I have sworn” —this is the Lord’s declaration—“Bozrah will become a desolation, a disgrace, a ruin, and a curse, and all her cities will become ruins forever.”

14 I have heard a message from the Lord;

a messenger has been sent among the nations:

Assemble yourselves to come against her.

Rise up for war!

15 Look, I will certainly make you insignificant among the nations,

despised among humanity.

16 As to the terror you cause,

your presumptuous heart has deceived you.

You who live in the clefts of the rock,

you who occupy the mountain summit,

though you elevate your nest like the eagle,

even from there I will bring you down.

This is the Lord’s declaration.

12 For thus says the Lord: If those who do not deserve to drink the cup still have to drink it, shall you be the one to go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished; you must drink it. 13 For by myself I have sworn, says the Lord, that Bozrah shall become an object of horror and ridicule, a waste, and an object of cursing, and all her towns shall be perpetual wastes.

14 I have heard tidings from the Lord,

and a messenger has been sent among the nations:

“Gather yourselves together and come against her,

and rise up for battle!”

15 For I will make you least among the nations,

despised by humankind.

16 The terror you inspire

and the pride of your heart have deceived you,

you who live in the clefts of the rock,

who hold the height of the hill.

Although you make your nest as high as the eagle’s,

from there I will bring you down,

says the Lord.

12 For thus says Yahweh, “Look, those who are not condemned to drink the cup must certainly drink it. And are you the one who will go entirely unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for you must certainly drink it. 13 For I have sworn by myself,” declares Yahweh, “that Bozrah will become as a horror, as a disgrace, as a waste, and as a curse. And all her towns will be everlasting sites of ruins.”

14 I have heard a message from Yahweh,

and a messenger has been sent among the nations.

“Gather and come against her,

and rise for the battle.”

15 “For look, I will make you small among the nations,

despised by the humankind.

16 Your terror has deceived you,

the pride of your heart,

O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock,

you who seize the height of the hill.

Though you make your nest high like the eagle,

from there I will bring you down,” declares Yahweh.

12 The Lord says, “What if those who do not have to drink the cup must drink it anyway? Then shouldn’t you be punished? You will certainly be punished. You must drink the cup. 13 I make a promise with an oath in my own name. Bozrah will be destroyed,” announces the Lord. “People will be shocked at it. They will bring shame on it. They will call down curses on it. And all of its towns will be destroyed forever.”

14 I’ve heard a message from the Lord.

A messenger was sent to the nations. The Lord told him to say,

“Gather yourselves together to attack Edom!

Prepare for battle!”

15 The Lord says to Edom, “I will make you weak among the nations.

They will look down on you.

16 You live in the safety of the rocks.

You live on top of the hills.

But the terror you stir up has now turned against you.

Your proud heart has tricked you.

You build your nest as high as an eagle does.

But I will bring you down from there,”

announces the Lord.

12 For thus says the Lord, “Behold, those who were not sentenced to drink the cup will certainly drink it, and are you the one who will be completely acquitted? You will not be acquitted, but you will certainly drink it.

13 “For I have sworn by Myself,” declares the Lord, “that Bozrah will become an object of horror, a reproach, a ruin and a curse; and all its cities will become perpetual ruins.”

14 I have heard a message from the Lord,

And an envoy is sent among the nations, saying,

“Gather yourselves together and come against her,

And rise up for battle!”

15 “For behold, I have made you small among the nations,

Despised among men.

16 “As for the terror of you,

The arrogance of your heart has deceived you,

O you who live in the clefts of the rock,

Who occupy the height of the hill.

Though you make your nest as high as an eagle’s,

I will bring you down from there,” declares the Lord.
