Jeremiah 49:16–18 — The New International Version (NIV)

16 The terror you inspire

and the pride of your heart have deceived you,

you who live in the clefts of the rocks,

who occupy the heights of the hill.

Though you build your nest as high as the eagle’s,

from there I will bring you down,”

declares the Lord.

17 “Edom will become an object of horror;

all who pass by will be appalled and will scoff

because of all its wounds.

18 As Sodom and Gomorrah were overthrown,

along with their neighboring towns,”

says the Lord,

“so no one will live there;

no people will dwell in it.

Jeremiah 49:16–18 — English Standard Version (ESV)

16 The horror you inspire has deceived you,

and the pride of your heart,

you who live in the clefts of the rock,

who hold the height of the hill.

Though you make your nest as high as the eagle’s,

I will bring you down from there,

declares the Lord.

17 “Edom shall become a horror. Everyone who passes by it will be horrified and will hiss because of all its disasters. 18 As when Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring cities were overthrown, says the Lord, no man shall dwell there, no man shall sojourn in her.

Jeremiah 49:16–18 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

16 Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart,

O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock,

That holdest the height of the hill:

Though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle,

I will bring thee down from thence, saith the Lord.

17 Also Edom shall be a desolation:

Every one that goeth by it shall be astonished,

And shall hiss at all the plagues thereof.

18 As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah

And the neighbour cities thereof, saith the Lord,

No man shall abide there,

Neither shall a son of man dwell in it.

Jeremiah 49:16–18 — New Living Translation (NLT)

16 You have been deceived

by the fear you inspire in others

and by your own pride.

You live in a rock fortress

and control the mountain heights.

But even if you make your nest among the peaks with the eagles,

I will bring you crashing down,”

says the Lord.

17 “Edom will be an object of horror.

All who pass by will be appalled

and will gasp at the destruction they see there.

18 It will be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah

and their neighboring towns,” says the Lord.

“No one will live there;

no one will inhabit it.

Jeremiah 49:16–18 — New Century Version (NCV)

16 Edom, you frightened other nations,

but your pride has fooled you.

You live in the hollow places of the cliff

and control the high places of the hills.

Even if you build your home as high as an eagle’s nest,

I will bring you down from there,” says the Lord.

17 “Edom will be destroyed.

People who pass by will be shocked to see the destroyed cities,

and they will be amazed at all her injuries.

18 Edom will be destroyed like the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah

and the towns around them,” says the Lord.

“No one will live there!

No one will stay in Edom.”

Jeremiah 49:16–18 — American Standard Version (ASV)

16 As for thy terribleness, the pride of thy heart hath deceived thee, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith Jehovah. 17 And Edom shall become an astonishment: every one that passeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss at all the plagues thereof. 18 As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbor cities thereof, saith Jehovah, no man shall dwell there, neither shall any son of man sojourn therein.

Jeremiah 49:16–18 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

16 Thy terribleness, the pride of thy heart, hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill. Though thou shouldest make thy nest high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith Jehovah. 17 And Edom shall be an astonishment: every one that goeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss, because of all the plagues thereof. 18 As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, and their neighbour cities, saith Jehovah, no one shall dwell there, neither shall a son of man sojourn therein.

Jeremiah 49:16–18 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

16 You have frightened other people.

Your arrogance has deceived you.

You live on rocky cliffs

and occupy the highest places in the hills.

Even though you build your nest as high as an eagle,

I will bring you down from there,” declares the Lord

17 “Then Edom will become something horrible.

Everyone who passes by it will be horrified

and hiss at all its wounds.

18 Edom will be like Sodom, Gomorrah, and their neighboring cities

when they were destroyed.

No one will live there.

No human will stay there,” says the Lord

Jeremiah 49:16–18 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

16 As to the terror you cause,

your presumptuous heart has deceived you.

You who live in the clefts of the rock,

you who occupy the mountain summit,

though you elevate your nest like the eagle,

even from there I will bring you down.

This is the Lord’s declaration.

17 “Edom will become a desolation. Everyone who passes by her will be horrified and scoff because of all her wounds. 18 As when Sodom and Gomorrah were overthrown along with their neighbors,” says the Lord, “no one will live there; no human being will even stay in it as a temporary resident.

and the pride of your heart have deceived you,

who hold the height of the hill.

Although you make your nest as high as the eagle’s,

from there I will bring you down,

says the Lord.

17 Edom shall become an object of horror; everyone who passes by it will be horrified and will hiss because of all its disasters. 18 As when Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbors were overthrown, says the Lord, no one shall live there, nor shall anyone settle in it.

the pride of your heart,

O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock,

Though you make your nest high like the eagle,

from there I will bring you down,” declares Yahweh.

17 “And Edom will become as a horror,

everyone who passes by it will be appalled,

and will hiss because of all its blows.

18 As the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah

and their neighbors,” says Yahweh,

“no one will live there,

and the son of humankind will not dwell as an alien in it.

Jeremiah 49:16–18 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

16 You live in the safety of the rocks.

You live on top of the hills.

But the terror you stir up has now turned against you.

Your proud heart has tricked you.

You build your nest as high as an eagle does.

But I will bring you down from there,”

announces the Lord.

17 “People of Edom,

all those who pass by you will be shocked.

They will make fun of you

because of all of your wounds.

18 Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed.

So were the towns that were near them,”

says the Lord.

“You will be just like them.

No one will live in your land.

No one will stay there even for a short time.

I will bring you down from there,” declares the Lord.

17 Edom will become an object of horror; everyone who passes by it will be horrified and will hiss at all its wounds.

18 “Like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah with its neighbors,” says the Lord, “no one will live there, nor will a son of man reside in it.
