Hosea 10:5–8 — The New International Version (NIV)

The people who live in Samaria fear

for the calf-idol of Beth Aven.

Its people will mourn over it,

and so will its idolatrous priests,

those who had rejoiced over its splendor,

because it is taken from them into exile.

It will be carried to Assyria

as tribute for the great king.

Ephraim will be disgraced;

Israel will be ashamed of its foreign alliances.

Samaria’s king will be destroyed,

swept away like a twig on the surface of the waters.

The high places of wickedness will be destroyed—

it is the sin of Israel.

Thorns and thistles will grow up

and cover their altars.

Then they will say to the mountains, “Cover us!”

and to the hills, “Fall on us!”

Hosea 10:5–8 — English Standard Version (ESV)

The inhabitants of Samaria tremble

for the calf of Beth-aven.

Its people mourn for it, and so do its idolatrous priests—

those who rejoiced over it and over its glory—

for it has departed from them.

The thing itself shall be carried to Assyria

as tribute to the great king.

Ephraim shall be put to shame,

and Israel shall be ashamed of his idol.

Samaria’s king shall perish

like a twig on the face of the waters.

The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel,

shall be destroyed.

Thorn and thistle shall grow up

on their altars,

and they shall say to the mountains, “Cover us,”

and to the hills, “Fall on us.”

Hosea 10:5–8 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calves of Beth-aven:

For the people thereof shall mourn over it,

And the priests thereof that rejoiced on it,

For the glory thereof, because it is departed from it.

It shall be also carried unto Assyria for a present to king Jareb:

Ephraim shall receive shame,

And Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel.

As for Samaria, her king is cut off

As the foam upon the water.

The high places also of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed:

The thorn and the thistle shall come up on their altars;

And they shall say to the mountains, Cover us;

And to the hills, Fall on us.

Hosea 10:5–8 — New Living Translation (NLT)

The people of Samaria tremble in fear

for their calf idol at Beth-aven,

and they mourn for it.

Though its priests rejoice over it,

its glory will be stripped away.

This idol will be carted away to Assyria,

a gift to the great king there.

Ephraim will be ridiculed and Israel will be shamed,

because its people have trusted in this idol.

Samaria and its king will be cut off;

they will float away like driftwood on an ocean wave.

And the pagan shrines of Aven, the place of Israel’s sin, will crumble.

Thorns and thistles will grow up around their altars.

They will beg the mountains, “Bury us!”

and plead with the hills, “Fall on us!”

Hosea 10:5–8 — New Century Version (NCV)

The people from Israel are worried about

the calf-shaped idol at Beth Aven.

The people will cry about it,

and the priests will cry about it.

They used to shout for joy about its glory,

but it will be carried off to Assyria

as a gift to the great king.

Israel will be disgraced,

and the people will be ashamed for not obeying.

Israel will be destroyed;

its king will be like a chip of wood floating on the water.

The places of false worship will be destroyed,

the places where Israel sins.

Thorns and weeds will grow up

and cover their altars.

Then they will say to the mountains, “Cover us!”

and to the hills, “Fall on us!”

Hosea 10:5–8 — American Standard Version (ASV)

The inhabitants of Samaria shall be in terror for the calves of Beth-aven; for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and the priests thereof that rejoiced over it, for the glory thereof, because it is departed from it. It also, shall be carried unto Assyria for a present to king Jareb: Ephraim shall receive shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel. As for Samaria, her king is cut off, as foam upon the water. The high places also of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed: the thorn and the thistle shall come up on their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us; and to the hills, Fall on us.

Hosea 10:5–8 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calf of Beth-aven; for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and the idolatrous priests thereof shall tremble for it, for its glory, because it is departed from it. Yea, it shall be carried unto Assyria as a present for king Jareb: Ephraim shall be seized with shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel. As for Samaria her king is cut off as chips upon the face of the waters. And the high places of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed: the thorn and the thistle shall come up upon their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us! and to the hills, Fall on us!

Hosea 10:5–8 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

Those who live in Samaria fear the calf-shaped idol at Beth Aven.

The people will mourn over it.

The priests will cry loudly

because its glory will be taken away into captivity.

The thing itself will be carried to Assyria

as a present to the great king.

Ephraim will be disgraced.

Israel will be ashamed because of its plans.

The king of Samaria will be carried away

like a piece of wood on water.

The illegal worship sites of Aven will be destroyed.

Israel sins there.

Thorns and weeds will grow over those altars.

People will say to the mountains, “Cover us!”

and to the hills, “Fall on us!”

Hosea 10:5–8 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

The residents of Samaria will have anxiety

over the calf of Beth-aven.

Indeed, its idolatrous priests rejoiced over it;

the people will mourn over it,

over its glory.

It will certainly depart from them.

The calf itself will be taken to Assyria

as an offering to the great king.

Ephraim will experience shame;

Israel will be ashamed of its counsel.

Samaria’s king will disappear

like foam on the surface of the water.

The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel,

will be destroyed;

thorns and thistles will grow over their altars.

They will say to the mountains, “Cover us!”

and to the hills, “Fall on us!”

Hosea 10:5–8 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Samaria’s king shall perish

like a chip on the face of the waters.

The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel,

on their altars.

They shall say to the mountains, Cover us,

and to the hills, Fall on us.

Hosea 10:5–8 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

The inhabitants of Samaria tremble

for the calf of Beth-aven.

Indeed, his people will mourn for it,

and his idolatrous priests will wail over it—

over its glory because it has departed from it.

It will also be brought to Assyria,

as tribute to the great king.

Ephraim will obtain disgrace

and Israel will be ashamed from his advice.

Samaria will be destroyed;

her king is like a chip on the surface of the water.

The high places of Aven,

the sin of Israel, will be destroyed.

Thorn and thistle will grow

on their altars.

They will say to the mountains, “Cover us,”

and to the hills, “Fall on us.”

Hosea 10:5–8 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

The people who live in Samaria are filled with fear.

They are afraid their god that looks like a calf

will be carried off from Bethel.

They will sob over it.

So will the priests who lead them to worship it.

The priests were full of joy

because their statue was so glorious.

But it will be captured

and taken far away from them.

It will be carried off to Assyria.

The people of Ephraim will be forced

to give it to the great king.

They will be dishonored.

Israel will be ashamed

that all they have left to worship is a wooden god.

Samaria’s king will be carried off.

He will be like a twig floating away in a river.

The high places where Israel worshiped other gods

will be destroyed.

That’s where they sinned against the Lord.

Thorns and weeds will grow up there.

They will cover the altars.

Then the people will say to the mountains, “Cover us!”

They’ll say to the hills, “Fall on us!”

Hosea 10:5–8 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

For the calf of Beth-aven.

Over its glory, since it has departed from it.

The thing itself will be carried to Assyria

As tribute to King Jareb;

Ephraim will be seized with shame

And Israel will be ashamed of its own counsel.

Samaria will be cut off with her king

Like a stick on the surface of the water.

Also the high places of Aven, the sin of Israel, will be destroyed;

Thorn and thistle will grow on their altars;

Then they will say to the mountains,

Cover us!” And to the hills, “Fall on us!”
