Genesis 11:1–32

The Tower of Babel

11 Now the whole earth had one language and one 1speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land aof Shinar, and they dwelt there. Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and 2bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower bwhose top is in the heavens; let us make a cname for ourselves, lest we dbe scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”

eBut the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. And the Lord said, “Indeed fthe people are one and they all have gone language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they hpropose to do will be withheld from them. Come, ilet Us go down and there jconfuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” So kthe Lord scattered them abroad from there lover the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. Therefore its name is called 3Babel, mbecause there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

18 Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu. 19 After he begot Reu, Peleg lived two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters.

20 Reu lived thirty-two years, and begot rSerug. 21 After he begot Serug, Reu lived two hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters.

22 Serug lived thirty years, and begot Nahor. 23 After he begot Nahor, Serug lived two hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

Matthew 1:1–25

Genealogy of Christ

Ruth 4:18–22; 1 Chr. 1:34, 2:1–15; Luke 3:31–34

1 The book of the agenealogy 1of Jesus Christ, bthe Son of David, cthe Son of Abraham:

dAbraham begot Isaac, eIsaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot fJudah and his brothers. gJudah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, hPerez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram. Ram begot Amminadab, Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon. Salmon begot iBoaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse, and jJesse begot David the king.

kDavid the king begot Solomon by her 2who had been the wife of Uriah. lSolomon begot Rehoboam, Rehoboam begot mAbijah, and Abijah begot 3Asa. Asa begot nJehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat begot Joram, and Joram begot oUzziah. Uzziah begot Jotham, Jotham begot pAhaz, and Ahaz begot Hezekiah. 10 qHezekiah begot Manasseh, Manasseh begot 4Amon, and Amon begot rJosiah. 11 sJosiah begot 5Jeconiah and his brothers about the time they were tcarried away to Babylon.

12 And after they were brought to Babylon, uJeconiah begot Shealtiel, and Shealtiel begot vZerubbabel. 13 Zerubbabel begot Abiud, Abiud begot Eliakim, and Eliakim begot Azor. 14 Azor begot Zadok, Zadok begot Achim, and Achim begot Eliud. 15 Eliud begot Eleazar, Eleazar begot Matthan, and Matthan begot Jacob. 16 And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of wMary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations.

Birth of Christ

18 Now the xbirth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child yof the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being 6a just man, and not wanting zto make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, afor that which is 7conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 bAnd she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name 8Jesus, cfor He will save His people from their sins.”

22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 d“Behold, 9the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, 25 and 1did not know her till she had brought forth eher 2firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.
