Isaiah 25:3–5 — English Standard Version (ESV)

Therefore strong peoples will glorify you;

cities of ruthless nations will fear you.

For you have been a stronghold to the poor,

a stronghold to the needy in his distress,

a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat;

for the breath of the ruthless is like a storm against a wall,

like heat in a dry place.

You subdue the noise of the foreigners;

as heat by the shade of a cloud,

so the song of the ruthless is put down.

Isaiah 25:3–5 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

Therefore shall the strong people glorify thee,

The city of the terrible nations shall fear thee.

For thou hast been a strength to the poor,

A strength to the needy in his distress,

A refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat,

When the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.

Thou shalt bring down the noise of strangers,

As the heat in a dry place;

Even the heat with the shadow of a cloud:

The branch of the terrible ones shall be brought low.

Isaiah 25:3–5 — New Living Translation (NLT)

Therefore, strong nations will declare your glory;

ruthless nations will fear you.

But you are a tower of refuge to the poor, O Lord,

a tower of refuge to the needy in distress.

You are a refuge from the storm

and a shelter from the heat.

For the oppressive acts of ruthless people

are like a storm beating against a wall,

or like the relentless heat of the desert.

But you silence the roar of foreign nations.

As the shade of a cloud cools relentless heat,

so the boastful songs of ruthless people are stilled.

Isaiah 25:3–5 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

Therefore the strong people will glorify You;

The city of the terrible nations will fear You.

For You have been a strength to the poor,

A strength to the needy in his distress,

A refuge from the storm,

A shade from the heat;

For the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.

You will reduce the noise of aliens,

As heat in a dry place;

As heat in the shadow of a cloud,

The song of the terrible ones will be diminished.

Isaiah 25:3–5 — New Century Version (NCV)

People from powerful nations will honor you;

cruel people from strong cities will fear you.

You protect the poor;

you protect the helpless when they are in danger.

You are like a shelter from storms,

like shade that protects them from the heat.

The cruel people attack

like a rainstorm beating against the wall,

like the heat in the desert.

But you, God, stop their violent attack.

As a cloud cools a hot day,

you silence the songs of those who have no mercy.

Isaiah 25:3–5 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Therefore shall a strong people glorify thee; a city of terrible nations shall fear thee. For thou hast been a stronghold to the poor, a stronghold to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall. As the heat in a dry place wilt thou bring down the noise of strangers; as the heat by the shade of a cloud, the song of the terrible ones shall be brought low.

Isaiah 25:3–5 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Therefore shall the mighty people glorify thee, the city of terrible nations shall fear thee. For thou hast been a fortress to the poor, a fortress for the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat: for the blast of the terrible ones has been as the storm against a wall. Thou hast subdued the tumult of strangers, as the heat in a dry place; as the heat, by the shadow of a cloud, so the song of the terrible ones is brought low.

Isaiah 25:3–5 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

That is why strong people will honor you,

and cities ruled by the world’s tyrants will fear you.

You have been a refuge for the poor,

a refuge for the needy in their distress,

a shelter from the rain, and shade from the heat.

(A tyrant’s breath is like a rainstorm against a wall,

like heat in a dry land.)

You calm the uproar of foreigners.

The song of tyrants is silenced

like heat that is ⸤reduced⸥ by the shadow of a cloud.

Isaiah 25:3–5 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Therefore, a strong people will honor You.

The cities of violent nations will fear You.

For You have been a stronghold for the poor,

a stronghold for the needy person in his distress,

a refuge from the rain, a shade from the heat.

When the breath of the violent

is like rain against a wall,

like heat in a dry land,

You subdue the uproar of barbarians.

As the shade of a cloud cools the heat of the day,

so He silences the song of the violent.

Isaiah 25:3–5 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Therefore strong peoples will glorify you;

cities of ruthless nations will fear you.

For you have been a refuge to the poor,

a refuge to the needy in their distress,

a shelter from the rainstorm and a shade from the heat.

When the blast of the ruthless was like a winter rainstorm,

the noise of aliens like heat in a dry place,

you subdued the heat with the shade of clouds;

the song of the ruthless was stilled.

Isaiah 25:3–5 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Therefore strong peoples will glorify you;

a city of ruthless nations, they will fear you.

For you have been a refuge to the poor,

a refuge to the needy in his distress,

a shelter from the rainstorm,

a shade from the heat.

For the breath of the ruthless was like a rainstorm against a wall,

the noise of foreigners like heat in a dry land.

You subdued the heat with the shade of a cloud;

the song of the ruthless was silenced.

Isaiah 25:3–5 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

Powerful nations will honor you.

Even sinful people from their cities will have respect for you.

Poor people have come to you for safety.

You have kept needy people safe when they were in trouble.

You have been a place to hide when storms came.

You have been a shade from the heat of the sun.

Evil people attack us.

They are like a storm beating against a wall.

They are like the heat of the desert.

You stopped the noisy shouts of our enemies.

You kept them from winning the battle over us and singing about it.

You are like the shadow of a cloud that cools the earth.

Isaiah 25:3–5 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

Therefore a strong people will glorify You;

Cities of ruthless nations will revere You.

For You have been a defense for the helpless,

A defense for the needy in his distress,

A refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat;

For the breath of the ruthless

Is like a rain storm against a wall.

Like heat in drought, You subdue the uproar of aliens;

Like heat by the shadow of a cloud, the song of the ruthless is silenced.
