Job 9:11–15

11 Behold, he passes by me, and I see him not;

he moves on, but I do not perceive him.

12 Behold, he snatches away; who can turn him back?

Who will say to him, ‘What are you doing?’

13 “God will not turn back his anger;

beneath him bowed the helpers of Rahab.

14 How then can I answer him,

choosing my words with him?

15 Though I am in the right, I cannot answer him;

I must appeal for mercy to my accuser.

11 Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not:

He passeth on also, but I perceive him not.

12 Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him?

Who will say unto him, What doest thou?

13 If God will not withdraw his anger,

The proud helpers do stoop under him.

14 How much less shall I answer him,

And choose out my words to reason with him?

15 Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer,

But I would make supplication to my judge.

11 “Yet when he comes near, I cannot see him.

When he moves by, I do not see him go.

12 If he snatches someone in death, who can stop him?

Who dares to ask, ‘What are you doing?’

13 And God does not restrain his anger.

Even the monsters of the sea are crushed beneath his feet.

14 “So who am I, that I should try to answer God

or even reason with him?

15 Even if I were right, I would have no defense.

I could only plead for mercy.

11 If He goes by me, I do not see Him;

If He moves past, I do not perceive Him;

12 If He takes away, who can hinder Him?

Who can say to Him, ‘What are You doing?’

13 God will not withdraw His anger,

The allies of the proud lie prostrate beneath Him.

14 “How then can I answer Him,

And choose my words to reason with Him?

15 For though I were righteous, I could not answer Him;

I would beg mercy of my Judge.

11 When he passes me, I cannot see him;

when he goes by me, I do not recognize him.

12 If he snatches something away, no one can stop him

or say to him, ‘What are you doing?’

13 God will not hold back his anger.

Even the helpers of the monster Rahab lie at his feet in fear.

14 So how can I argue with God,

or even find words to argue with him?

15 Even if I were right, I could not answer him;

I could only beg God, my Judge, for mercy.

The helpers of Rahab do stoop under him.

14 How much less shall I answer him,

He goes past me, and I don’t even notice him. 

12 He takes something away, ⸤but⸥ who can stop him? 

Who is going to ask him, ‘What are you doing?’ 

13 God does not hold back his anger. 

Even Rahab’shelpers bow humbly in front of him. 

14 “How can I possibly answer God? 

How can I find the right words ⸤to speak⸥ with him? 

15 Even if I were right, I could not answer ⸤him⸥. 

I would have to plead for mercy from my judge. 

11 If He passes by me, I wouldn’t see Him;

if He goes right by, I wouldn’t recognize Him.

12 If He snatches something, who can stop Him?

Who can ask Him, “What are You doing?”

13 God does not hold back His anger;

Rahab’s assistants cringe in fear beneath Him!

14 How then can I answer Him

or choose my arguments against Him?

15 Even if I were in the right, I could not answer.

I could only beg my Judge for mercy.

I must appeal to my accuser for my right.

11 “If he passes by me, I would not see him;

and if he should move on, I would not recognize him.

12 If he would snatch away, who could turn him?

Who could say to him, ‘What are you doing?’

13 God will not turn back his anger;

beneath him the helpers of Rahab bow.

14 How much less can I myself answer him?

How can I choose my words with him,

15 whom I cannot answer, even though I am righteous?

From my judge I must implore grace.

11 When he passes by me, I can’t see him.

When he goes past me, I can’t recognize him.

12 If he takes something, who can stop him?

Who would dare to ask him, ‘What are you doing?’

13 God doesn’t hold back his anger.

Even the helpers of the sea monster Rahab

bowed in fear at his feet.

14 “So how can I disagree with God?

How can I possibly argue with him?

15 Even if I hadn’t done anything wrong,

I couldn’t answer him.

I could only beg my Judge to have mercy on me.

11 “Were He to pass by me, I would not see Him;

Were He to move past me, I would not perceive Him.

12 “Were He to snatch away, who could restrain Him?

Who could say to Him, ‘What are You doing?’

13 “God will not turn back His anger;

Beneath Him crouch the helpers of Rahab.

14 “How then can I answer Him,

And choose my words before Him?

15 “For though I were right, I could not answer;

I would have to implore the mercy of my judge.
