Isaiah 47:1–3 — English Standard Version (ESV)

Come down and sit in the dust,

O virgin daughter of Babylon;

sit on the ground without a throne,

O daughter of the Chaldeans!

For you shall no more be called

tender and delicate.

Take the millstones and grind flour,

put off your veil,

strip off your robe, uncover your legs,

pass through the rivers.

Your nakedness shall be uncovered,

and your disgrace shall be seen.

I will take vengeance,

and I will spare no one.

Isaiah 47:1–3 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon,

Sit on the ground: there is no throne,

O daughter of the Chaldeans:

For thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.

Take the millstones, and grind meal:

Uncover thy locks, make bare the leg,

Uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.

Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen:

I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man.

Isaiah 47:1–3 — New Living Translation (NLT)

“Come down, virgin daughter of Babylon, and sit in the dust.

For your days of sitting on a throne have ended.

O daughter of Babylonia, never again will you be

the lovely princess, tender and delicate.

Take heavy millstones and grind flour.

Remove your veil, and strip off your robe.

Expose yourself to public view.

You will be naked and burdened with shame.

I will take vengeance against you without pity.”

Isaiah 47:1–3 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

“Come down and sit in the dust,

O virgin daughter of Babylon;

Sit on the ground without a throne,

O daughter of the Chaldeans!

For you shall no more be called

Tender and delicate.

Take the millstones and grind meal.

Remove your veil,

Take off the skirt,

Uncover the thigh,

Pass through the rivers.

Your nakedness shall be uncovered,

Yes, your shame will be seen;

I will take vengeance,

And I will not arbitrate with a man.”

Isaiah 47:1–3 — New Century Version (NCV)

The Lord says, “City of Babylon, go down and sit in the dirt.

People of Babylon, sit on the ground.

You are no longer the ruler.

You will no longer be called

tender or beautiful.

You must use large stones to grind grain into flour.

Remove your veil and your nice skirts.

Uncover your legs and cross the rivers.

People will see your nakedness;

they will see your shame.

I will punish you;

I will punish every one of you.”

Isaiah 47:1–3 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate. Take the millstones, and grind meal; remove thy veil, strip off the train, uncover the leg, pass through the rivers. Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and will spare no man.

Isaiah 47:1–3 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

I will take vengeance, and I will meet none to stay me. …

Isaiah 47:1–3 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

Sit on the ground, not on a throne,

princess of the Babylonians!

You will no longer be called soft and delicate.

Take millstones and grind flour.

Remove your veil.

Take off your skirt.

Uncover your legs, and cross the river.

People will see you naked.

People will see your shame.

I will take revenge.

I won’t spare anyone.

I will take vengeance;

I will spare no one.

“City of Babylon,

go down and sit in the dust.

Leave your throne and sit on the ground.

City of the Babylonians,

your life will not be comfortable

and easy anymore.

Get millstones and grind some flour like a female slave.

Take your veil off.

Lift your skirts up. Make your legs bare.

Wade through the streams.

Everyone will see your naked body.

Everyone will see your shame.

I will pay you back for what you did.

I will not spare any of your people.”
