15 Thus says the Lord God of hosts, “Come, go to this steward, to Shebna, who is over the household, and say to him: 16 What have you to do here, and whom have you here, that you have cut out here a tomb for yourself, you who cut out a tomb on the height and carve a dwelling for yourself in the rock? 17 Behold, the Lord will hurl you away violently, O you strong man. He will seize firm hold on you 18 and whirl you around and around, and throw you like a ball into a wide land. There you shall die, and there shall be your glorious chariots, you shame of your master’s house. 19 I will thrust you from your office, and you will be pulled down from your station.

15 Thus saith the Lord God of hosts, Go, get thee unto this treasurer, even unto Shebna, which is over the house, and say,

16 What hast thou here? and whom hast thou here,

That thou hast hewed thee out a sepulchre here,

As he that heweth him out a sepulchre on high,

And that graveth an habitation for himself in a rock?

17 Behold, the Lord will carry thee away with a mighty captivity,

And will surely cover thee.

18 He will surely violently turn and toss thee like a ball

Into a large country:

There shalt thou die,

And there the chariots of thy glory

Shall be the shame of thy lord’s house.

19 And I will drive thee from thy station,

And from thy state shall he pull thee down.

15 This is what the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, said to me: “Confront Shebna, the palace administrator, and give him this message:

16 “Who do you think you are,

and what are you doing here,

building a beautiful tomb for yourself—

a monument high up in the rock?

17 For the Lord is about to hurl you away, mighty man.

He is going to grab you,

18 crumple you into a ball,

and toss you away into a distant, barren land.

There you will die,

and your glorious chariots will be broken and useless.

You are a disgrace to your master!

19 “Yes, I will drive you out of office,” says the Lord. “I will pull you down from your high position.

15 Thus says the Lord God of hosts:

“Go, proceed to this steward,

To Shebna, who is over the house, and say:

16 ‘What have you here, and whom have you here,

That you have hewn a sepulcher here,

As he who hews himself a sepulcher on high,

Who carves a tomb for himself in a rock?

17 Indeed, the Lord will throw you away violently,

O mighty man,

And will surely seize you.

18 He will surely turn violently and toss you like a ball

Into a large country;

There you shall die, and there your glorious chariots

Shall be the shame of your master’s house.

19 So I will drive you out of your office,

And from your position he will pull you down.

15 This is what the Lord God All-Powerful says:

“Go to this servant Shebna,

the manager of the palace.

16 Say to him, ‘What are you doing here?

Who said you could cut out a tomb for your self here?

Why are you preparing your tomb in a high place?

Why are you carving out a tomb from the rock?

17 Look, mighty one! The Lord will throw you away.

He will take firm hold of you

18 and roll you tightly into a ball

and throw you into another country.

There you will die,

and there your fine chariots will remain.

You are a disgrace to your master’s house.

19 I will force you out of your important job,

and you will be thrown down from your important place.’

15 Thus saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, Go, get thee unto this treasurer, even unto Shebna, who is over the house, and say, 16 What doest thou here? and whom hast thou here, that thou hast hewed thee out here a sepulchre? hewing him out a sepulchre on high, graving a habitation for himself in the rock! 17 Behold, Jehovah, like a strong man, will hurl thee away violently; yea, he will wrap thee up closely. 18 He will surely wind thee round and round, and toss thee like a ball into a large country; there shalt thou die, and there shall be the chariots of thy glory, thou shame of thy lord’s house. 19 And I will thrust thee from thine office; and from thy station shalt thou be pulled down.

15 Thus saith the Lord Jehovah of hosts: Go, get thee in unto this steward, unto Shebna, who is over the house, and say, 16 What hast thou here? and whom hast thou here, that thou hast hewn thee out a sepulchre here, as he that heweth out his sepulchre on high, cutting out in the rock a habitation for himself? 17 Behold, Jehovah will hurl thee with the force of a mighty man, and will cover thee entirely. 18 Rolling thee up completely, he will roll thee as a ball into a wide country: there shalt thou die, and there shall be the chariots of thy glory, O shame of thy lord’s house! 19 And I will drive thee from thine office, and from thy station will I pull thee down.

15 This is what the Almighty Lord of Armies says: 

Go to Shebna, the man in charge of the palace, and say ⸤to him⸥, 

16 “What are you doing here? 

What right do you have to dig a tomb for yourself? 

What right do you have to cut it out in a prominent place? 

What right do you have to carve out 

a resting place for yourself in the rock? 

17 Look, mighty man! 

The Lord will throw you out. 

He will grab you. 

18 He will wrap you up tightly like a turban. 

He will throw you far away into another land. 

There you will die. 

There your splendid chariots will remain. 

There you will become a disgrace to your master’s household. 

19 “I will remove you from your office 

and do away with your position. 

15 The Lord God of Hosts said: “Go to Shebna, that steward who is in charge of the palace, and say to him: 16 What are you doing here? Who authorized you to carve out a tomb for yourself here, carving your tomb on the height and cutting a crypt for yourself out of rock? 17 Look, you strong man! The Lord is about to shake you violently. He will take hold of you, 18 wind you up into a ball, and sling you into a wide land. There you will die, and there your glorious chariots will be—a disgrace to the house of your lord. 19 I will remove you from your office; you will be ousted from your position.

15 Thus says the Lord God of hosts: Come, go to this steward, to Shebna, who is master of the household, and say to him: 16 What right do you have here? Who are your relatives here, that you have cut out a tomb here for yourself, cutting a tomb on the height, and carving a habitation for yourself in the rock? 17 The Lord is about to hurl you away violently, my fellow. He will seize firm hold on you, 18 whirl you round and round, and throw you like a ball into a wide land; there you shall die, and there your splendid chariots shall lie, O you disgrace to your master’s house! 19 I will thrust you from your office, and you will be pulled down from your post.

15 The Lord, Yahweh of hosts, says this:

“Go! Go to this steward, to Shebna,

who is over the house:

16 ‘What business do you have here,

and who do you have here,

that you have cut a grave cutting here for yourself,

carving his grave on the height,

a dwelling place for him in the rock?

17 Look! Yahweh is about to really hurl you, man!

And he is about to grasp you firmly;

18 he will wind a winding tightly around you like a ball, to a wide land.

There you shall die,

and there the chariots of your splendor will be,

disgrace to your master’s house!

19 And I will push you from your office,

and he will throw you down from your position.

15 The Lord who rules over all speaks. The Lord says,

“Go. Speak to the head servant Shebna.

He is in charge of the palace. Tell him,

16 ‘What are you doing here outside the city?

Who allowed you to cut out a tomb for yourself here?

Who said you could carve out your grave on the hillside?

Who allowed you to cut out your resting place in the rock?

17 “ ‘Watch out, you mighty man!

The Lord is about to grab hold of you.

He is about to throw you away.

18 He will roll you up tightly like a ball.

He will throw you into a very large country.

There you will die.

And there the chariots you are so proud of will remain.

You bring shame on your master’s family!

19 The Lord will remove you from your job.

You will be brought down from your high position.

15 Thus says the Lord God of hosts,

“Come, go to this steward,

To Shebna, who is in charge of the royal household,

16 ‘What right do you have here,

And whom do you have here,

That you have hewn a tomb for yourself here,

You who hew a tomb on the height,

You who carve a resting place for yourself in the rock?

17 ‘Behold, the Lord is about to hurl you headlong, O man.

And He is about to grasp you firmly

18 And roll you tightly like a ball,

To be cast into a vast country;

There you will die

And there your splendid chariots will be,

You shame of your master’s house.’

19 “I will depose you from your office,

And I will pull you down from your station.
