3 What will you do on the day of punishment,

in the ruin that will come from afar?

To whom will you flee for help,

and where will you leave your wealth?

4 Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners

or fall among the slain.

For all this his anger has not turned away,

and his hand is stretched out still.

5 Woe to Assyria, the rod of my anger;

the staff in their hands is my fury!

6 Against a godless nation I send him,

and against the people of my wrath I command him,

to take spoil and seize plunder,

and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

3 And what will ye do in the day of visitation,

And in the desolation which shall come from far?

To whom will ye flee for help?

And where will ye leave your glory?

4 Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners,

And they shall fall under the slain.

For all this his anger is not turned away,

But his hand is stretched out still.

5 O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger,

And the staff in their hand is mine indignation.

6 I will send him against an hypocritical nation,

And against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge,

To take the spoil, and to take the prey,

And to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

3 What will you do when I punish you,

when I send disaster upon you from a distant land?

To whom will you turn for help?

Where will your treasures be safe?

4 You will stumble along as prisoners

or lie among the dead.

But even then the Lord’s anger will not be satisfied.

His fist is still poised to strike.

5 “What sorrow awaits Assyria, the rod of my anger.

I use it as a club to express my anger.

6 I am sending Assyria against a godless nation,

against a people with whom I am angry.

Assyria will plunder them,

trampling them like dirt beneath its feet.

3 What will you do in the day of punishment,

And in the desolation which will come from afar?

To whom will you flee for help?

And where will you leave your glory?

4 Without Me they shall bow down among the prisoners,

And they shall fall among the slain.”

For all this His anger is not turned away,

But His hand is stretched out still.

5 “Woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger

And the staff in whose hand is My indignation.

6 I will send him against an ungodly nation,

And against the people of My wrath

I will give him charge,

To seize the spoil, to take the prey,

And to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

3 How will you explain the things you have done?

What will you do when your destruction comes from far away?

Where will you run for help?

Where will you hide your riches then?

4 You will have to bow down among the captives

or fall down among the dead bodies.

But the Lord is still angry;

his hand is still raised to strike down the people.

5 God says, “How terrible it will be for the king of Assyria.

I use him like a rod to show my anger;

in anger I use Assyria like a club.

6 I send it to fight against a nation that is separated from God.

I am angry with those people,

so I command Assyria to fight against them,

to take their wealth from them,

to trample them down like dirt in the streets.

To whom will ye flee for help, and where will ye leave your glory? 4 They can but crouch under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.

5 Ah! the Assyrian! the rod of mine anger! and the staff in their hand is mine indignation. 6 I will send him against a hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge; to take the spoil, and to seize the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

you are called to account ⸤for these things⸥, 

when the disaster comes from far away? 

Where will you run for help? 

Where will you leave your wealth? 

4 Nothing’s left but to crouch among prisoners 

and to fall with those who are killed. 

Even after all this, his anger will not disappear, 

and he is still ready to use his power. 

5 “How horrible it will be for Assyria! 

It is the rod of my anger. 

My fury is the staff in the Assyrians’ hands. 

6 I send them against a godless nation. 

In my fury I order them against the people 

to take their belongings, loot them, 

and trample on them like mud in the streets.

Where will you leave your wealth?

4 There will be nothing to do

except crouch among the prisoners

or fall among the slain.

In all this, His anger is not removed,

and His hand is still raised to strike.

I will command him to go

against a people destined for My rage,

to take spoils, to plunder,

and to trample them down like clay in the streets.

3 What will you do on the day of punishment,

in the calamity that will come from far away?

To whom will you flee for help,

and where will you leave your wealth,

4 so as not to crouch among the prisoners

or fall among the slain?

For all this his anger has not turned away;

his hand is stretched out still.

5 Ah, Assyria, the rod of my anger—

the club in their hands is my fury!

and still his hand is stretched out.

5 Ah! Assyria, the rod of my anger,

and a staff is in their hand: my wrath!

6 I send him against a godless nation,

and I command him against the people of my wrath,

to capture spoil

and to carry off plunder,

and to make them a trampling place,

like the clay of the streets.

3 What will you do on the day when the Lord punishes you?

On that day trouble will come from far away.

Who will you run to for help?

Who will you trust your riches with?

4 All you can do is bow down in fear among the prisoners.

All you can do is fall among those who have died in battle.

Even then, the Lord is still angry.

His hand is still raised against them.

5 The Lord says, “How terrible it will be for the people of Assyria!

They are the war club that carries out my anger.

6 I will send them against the ungodly nation of Judah.

I will order them to fight against my own people.

They make me angry.

I will order them to take their goods and carry them away.

I will order them to walk on my people

as if they were walking on mud.

3 Now what will you do in the day of punishment,

And in the devastation which will come from afar?

To whom will you flee for help?

And where will you leave your wealth?

And to trample them down like mud in the streets.
