Amos 8:9–12 — English Standard Version (ESV)

“And on that day,” declares the Lord God,

“I will make the sun go down at noon

and darken the earth in broad daylight.

10 I will turn your feasts into mourning

and all your songs into lamentation;

I will bring sackcloth on every waist

and baldness on every head;

I will make it like the mourning for an only son

and the end of it like a bitter day.

11 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God,

“when I will send a famine on the land—

not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,

but of hearing the words of the Lord.

12 They shall wander from sea to sea,

and from north to east;

they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the Lord,

but they shall not find it.

Amos 8:9–12 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord God,

That I will cause the sun to go down at noon,

And I will darken the earth in the clear day:

10 And I will turn your feasts into mourning,

And all your songs into lamentation;

And I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins,

And baldness upon every head;

And I will make it as the mourning of an only son,

And the end thereof as a bitter day.

11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God,

That I will send a famine in the land,

Not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,

But of hearing the words of the Lord:

12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east,

They shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.

Amos 8:9–12 — New Living Translation (NLT)

“In that day,” says the Sovereign Lord,

“I will make the sun go down at noon

and darken the earth while it is still day.

10 I will turn your celebrations into times of mourning

and your singing into weeping.

You will wear funeral clothes

and shave your heads to show your sorrow—

as if your only son had died.

How very bitter that day will be!

11 “The time is surely coming,” says the Sovereign Lord,

“when I will send a famine on the land—

not a famine of bread or water

but of hearing the words of the Lord.

12 People will stagger from sea to sea

and wander from border to border

searching for the word of the Lord,

but they will not find it.

Amos 8:9–12 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

“And it shall come to pass in that day,” says the Lord God,

“That I will make the sun go down at noon,

And I will darken the earth in broad daylight;

10 I will turn your feasts into mourning,

And all your songs into lamentation;

I will bring sackcloth on every waist,

And baldness on every head;

I will make it like mourning for an only son,

And its end like a bitter day.

11 “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord God,

“That I will send a famine on the land,

Not a famine of bread,

Nor a thirst for water,

But of hearing the words of the Lord.

12 They shall wander from sea to sea,

And from north to east;

They shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord,

But shall not find it.

Amos 8:9–12 — New Century Version (NCV)

The Lord God says:

“At that time I will cause the sun to go down at noon

and make the earth dark on a bright day.

10 I will change your festivals into days of crying for the dead,

and all your songs will become songs of sadness.

I will make all of you wear rough cloth to show your sadness;

I will make you shave your heads as well.

I will make it like a time of crying for the death of an only son,

and its end like the end of an awful day.”

11 The Lord God says: “The days are coming

when I will cause a time of hunger in the land.

The people will not be hungry for bread or thirsty for water,

but they will be hungry for words from the Lord.

12 They will wander from the Mediterranean Sea to the Dead Sea,

from the north to the east.

They will search for the word of the Lord,

but they won’t find it.

Amos 8:9–12 — American Standard Version (ASV)

11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord Jehovah, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Jehovah. 12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east; they shall run to and fro to seek the word of Jehovah, and shall not find it.

11 Behold, days come, saith the Lord Jehovah, when I will send a famine in the land; not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Jehovah. 12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north to the east; they shall run to and fro to seek the word of Jehovah, and shall not find it.

Amos 8:9–12 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

On that day, declares the Almighty Lord

I will make the sun go down at noon

and darken the earth in broad daylight.

10 I will turn your festivals into funerals

and all your songs into funeral songs.

I will put sackcloth around everyone’s waist

and shave everyone’s head.

I will make that day seem like a funeral for an only child,

and its end will be bitter.

11 The days are going to come, declares the Almighty Lord

when I will send a famine throughout the land.

It won’t be an ordinary famine or drought.

Instead, there will be a famine of hearing the words of the Lord

12 People will wander from sea to sea

and roam from the north to the east,

searching for the Lord’s word.

But they won’t find it.

Amos 8:9–12 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

And in that day—

this is the declaration of the Lord God

I will make the sun go down at noon;

I will darken the land in the daytime.

10 I will turn your feasts into mourning

and all your songs into lamentation;

I will cause everyone to wear sackcloth

and every head to be shaved.

I will make that grief

like mourning for an only son

and its outcome like a bitter day.

11 Hear this! The days are coming—

this is the declaration of the Lord God

when I will send a famine through the land:

not a famine of bread or a thirst for water,

but of hearing the words of the Lord.

12 People will stagger from sea to sea

and roam from north to east,

seeking the word of the Lord,

but they will not find it.

I will make it like the mourning for an only son,

and the end of it like a bitter day.

11 The time is surely coming, says the Lord God,

when I will send a famine on the land;

not a famine of bread, or a thirst for water,

but of hearing the words of the Lord.

12 They shall wander from sea to sea,

and from north to east;

they shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord,

but they shall not find it.

And I will make it like the mourning for an only child, and its end like a bitter day. 11 Look, the days are coming,” declares my Lord Yahweh, “when I will send a famine in the land, not a famine for bread and not a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Yahweh! 12 And they will wander from sea to sea and from the north and to the east. They will roam about to seek the word of Yahweh, but they will not find it!

You will have to wear black clothes.

You will shave your heads.

I will make you sob as if your only son had died.

The end of that time will be like a bitter day.”

11 The Lord and King announces,

“The days are coming

when I will send hunger through the land.

But people will not be hungry for food.

They will not be thirsty for water.

Instead, they will be hungry

They will travel from north to east.

They will look for a message from me.

But they will not find it.
