1 Samuel 2:1–10

Hannah’s Prayer

2Then Hannah prayed and said:^s

“My heart rejoices^t in the Lord;

in the Lord my horn^au is lifted high.

My mouth boasts^v over my enemies,^w

for I delight in your deliverance.

²“There is no one holy^x like^y the Lord;

there is no one besides you;

there is no Rock^z like our God.

³“Do not keep talking so proudly

or let your mouth speak such arrogance,^a

for the Lord is a God who knows,^b

and by him deeds^c are weighed.^d

⁴“The bows of the warriors are broken,^e

but those who stumbled are armed with strength.^f

⁵Those who were full hire themselves out for food,

but those who were hungry^g are hungry no more.

She who was barren^h has borne seven children,

but she who has had many sons pines away.

⁶“The Lord brings death and makes alive;ⁱ

he brings down to the grave and raises up.^j

⁷The Lord sends poverty and wealth;^k

he humbles and he exalts.^l

⁸He raises^m the poorⁿ from the dust^o

and lifts the needy^p from the ash heap;

he seats them with princes

and has them inherit a throne of honor.^q

“For the foundations^r of the earth are the Lord’s;

on them he has set the world.

⁹He will guard the feet^s of his faithful servants,^t

but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.^u

“It is not by strength^v that one prevails;

¹⁰those who oppose the Lord will be broken.^w

The Most High will thunder^x from heaven;

the Lord will judge^y the ends of the earth.

“He will give strength^z to his king

and exalt the horn^a of his anointed.”
