Footnotes

  1. 38 Heb “who thicken on their sediment.” The imagery comes from wine making, where the wine, if allowed to remain on the sediment too long, will thicken into syrup. The image suggests that the people described here were complacent in their sinful behavior and interpreted the delay in judgment as divine apathy.
  2. 39 Heb “who say in their hearts.”
  3. 40 Heb “The Lord does not do good nor does he do evil.”

At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps,

‘The Lord will not do good,

nor will he do ill.’

either good or bad.’

The Lord will do nothing—good or bad.

NLTNew Living Translation

“I will search with lanterns in Jerusalem’s darkest corners

to punish those who sit complacent in their sins.

They think the Lord will do nothing to them,

either good or bad.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

And it shall be that at that time

I will search Jerusalem with lamps,

and I will punish the men

whose senses are dulled from drinking,

who say in their hearts,

‘Yahweh will not do good, nor will he do evil.’

KJV 1900King James Version

And it shall come to pass at that time,

That I will search Jerusalem with candles,

And punish the men that are settled on their lees:

That say in their heart, The Lord will not do good, neither will he do evil.
