A number of English versions transliterate the Hebrew term (cf. , , , ) or simply use the generic term “idols” (so , , ).
  2. 3 Shepherd is a common OT metaphor for the king (see esp. Jer 2:8; 3:15; 10:21; 23:1–2; 50:6; Ezek 34).

Household gods give worthless advice,

fortune-tellers predict only lies,

falsehoods that give no comfort.

So my people are wandering like lost sheep;

they are attacked because they have no shepherd.

Because the household gods speak deceit,

and those who practice divination see a lie,

Therefore the people wander like sheep;

they are afflicted because there is no shepherd.

For the idols have spoken vanity,

And the diviners have seen a lie,

And have told false dreams;

They comfort in vain:

They were troubled, because there was no shepherd.
