Footnotes

  1. 14 Grk “who.” The relative pronoun was converted to a personal pronoun and, because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.
  2. 15 Or “will render,” “will recompense.” In this context Paul is setting up a hypothetical situation, not stating that salvation is by works.
  3. 16 A quotation from Ps 62:12; Prov 24:12; a close approximation to Matt 16:27.
  4. 17 This contrast is clearer and stronger in Greek than can be easily expressed in English.
  5. 18 Grk “those who [are] from selfish ambition.”
  6. 19 Grk “are persuaded by, obey.”
  7. 20 No verb is expressed in this verse, but the verb “to be” is implied by the Greek construction. Literally “suffering and distress on everyone …”
  8. 21 Grk “every soul of man.”
  9. 22 Paul uses the term Greek here and in v. 10 to refer to non-Jews, i.e., Gentiles.

There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek,

NIVNew International Version (2011)

God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile;

CSBChristian Standard Bible

He will repay each one according to his works: eternal life to those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor, and immortality; but wrath and anger to those who are self-seeking and disobey the truth while obeying unrighteousness. There will be affliction and distress for every human being who does evil, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek;

NLTNew Living Translation

He will judge everyone according to what they have done. He will give eternal life to those who keep on doing good, seeking after the glory and honor and immortality that God offers. But he will pour out his anger and wrath on those who live for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and instead live lives of wickedness. There will be trouble and calamity for everyone who keeps on doing what is evil—for the Jew first and also for the Gentile.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible
