Footnotes

  1. 17 “As much as” is the translation of ὅσα (hosa).
  2. 18 On the term ἐστρηνίασεν (estrēniasen) στρηνιάω states, “live in luxury, live sensually Rv 18:7. W. πορνεύειν vs. 9.”
  3. 19 Grk “said in her heart,” an idiom for saying something to oneself.
  4. 20 Grk “For this reason, her plagues will come.”
  5. 21 Grk “death.” θάνατος (thanatos) can in particular contexts refer to a manner of death, specifically a contagious disease (see 3; L&N 23.158).
  6. 22 This is the same Greek word (πένθος, penthos) translated “grief” in vv. 7–8.
  7. 23 Here “burned down” was used to translate κατακαυθήσεται (katakauthēsetai) because a city is in view.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

As she glorified herself and lived in luxury,

so give her a like measure of torment and mourning,

since in her heart she says,

‘I sit as a queen,

I am no widow,

and mourning I shall never see.’

For this reason her plagues will come in a single day,

death and mourning and famine,

and she will be burned up with fire;

for mighty is the Lord God who has judged her.”

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Give her as much torment and grief

as the glory and luxury she gave herself.

In her heart she boasts,

‘I sit enthroned as queen.

I am not a widow;

I will never mourn.’

Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her:

death, mourning and famine.

She will be consumed by fire,

for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

As much as she glorified herself and indulged her sensual and excessive ways,

give her that much torment and grief.

For she says in her heart,

“I sit as a queen;

I am not a widow,

and I will never see grief.”

For this reason her plagues will come in just one day—

death and grief and famine.

She will be burned up with fire,

because the Lord God who judges her is mighty.

NLTNew Living Translation

She glorified herself and lived in luxury,

so match it now with torment and sorrow.

She boasted in her heart,

‘I am queen on my throne.

I am no helpless widow,

and I have no reason to mourn.’

Therefore, these plagues will overtake her in a single day—

death and mourning and famine.

She will be completely consumed by fire,

for the Lord God who judges her is mighty.”

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

As much as she glorified herself and lived in luxury,

give to her so much torment and mourning,

because in her heart she said,

‘I sit as a queen, and am not a widow,

and I will never see mourning!’

Because of this her plagues will come in one day—

death and mourning and famine—

and she will be burned up with fire,

because the Lord God who passes judgment on her is powerful!”

KJV 1900King James Version

How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously,

So much torment and sorrow give her:

For she saith in her heart, I sit a queen,

And am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.

Therefore shall her plagues come in one day,

Death, and mourning, and famine;

And she shall be utterly burned with fire:

For strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.
