92:6The spiritually insensitive do not recognize this;
the fool does not understand this.6
92:7When the wicked sprout up like grass,
and all the evildoers glisten,7
it is so that they may be annihilated.8
92:8But you, O Lord, reign9 forever!
92:9Indeed,10 look at your enemies, O Lord!
Indeed,11 look at how your enemies perish!
All the evildoers are scattered!
92:10You exalt my horn like that of a wild ox.12
I am covered13 with fresh oil.
92:11I gloat in triumph over those who tried to ambush me;14
I hear the defeated cries of the evil foes who attacked me.15
92:12The godly16 grow like a palm tree;
they grow high like a cedar in Lebanon.17
92:13Planted in the Lord’s house,
they grow in the courts of our God.
92:14They bear fruit even when they are old;
they are filled with vitality and have many leaves.18
92:15So they proclaim that the Lord, my protector,
is just and never unfair.19
Footnotes
- 6 Heb “the brutish man does not know, and the fool does not understand this.” The adjective בַּעַר (ba’ar, “brutish”) refers to spiritual insensitivity, not mere lack of intelligence or reasoning ability (see Pss 49:10; 73:22; Prov 12:1; 30:2, as well as the use of the related verb in Ps 94:8).
- 7 Or “flourish.”
- 8 Heb “in order that they might be destroyed permanently.” God allows the wicked to prosper temporarily so that he might reveal his justice. When the wicked are annihilated, God demonstrates that wickedness does not pay off.
- 9 Heb “[are elevated] on high.”
- 10 Or “for.”
- 11 Or “for.”
- 12 The horn of the wild ox is frequently a metaphor for military strength; the idiom “to exalt/lift up the horn” signifies military victory (see 1 Sam 2:10; Pss 75:10; 89:24; Lam 2:17).
- 13 The Hebrew verb בָּלַל (balal) usually has the nuance “to mix.” Here it seems to mean “to smear” or “to anoint.” Some emend the form to בַּלֹּתַנִי (ballotaniy; a second person form of the verb with a first person suffix) and read, “you anoint me.”
- 14 Heb “my eye gazes upon those who watch me [with evil intent].” See also Pss 5:8; 27:11; 56:2. The form שׁוּרָי (shuray) should be emended to שׁוֹרְרָי (shoréray).
- 15 Heb “those who rise up against me, evil [foes], my ears hear.”
- 16 The singular is used in a representative sense, with the typical godly person being in view.
- 17 The cedars of the Lebanon forest were well-known in ancient Israel for their immense size.
- 18 Heb “they are juicy and fresh.”
- 19 Heb “so that [they] proclaim that upright [is] the Lord, my rocky summit, and there is no injustice in him.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version
The stupid man cannot know;
the fool cannot understand this:
that though the wicked sprout like grass
and all evildoers flourish,
they are doomed to destruction forever;
but you, O Lord, are on high forever.
For behold, your enemies, O Lord,
for behold, your enemies shall perish;
all evildoers shall be scattered.
But you have exalted my horn like that of the wild ox;
you have poured over me fresh oil.
My eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies;
my ears have heard the doom of my evil assailants.
The righteous flourish like the palm tree
and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
They are planted in the house of the Lord;
they flourish in the courts of our God.
They still bear fruit in old age;
they are ever full of sap and green,
to declare that the Lord is upright;
he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

NIVNew International Version (2011)
Senseless people do not know,
fools do not understand,
that though the wicked spring up like grass
and all evildoers flourish,
they will be destroyed forever.
But you, Lord, are forever exalted.
For surely your enemies, Lord,
surely your enemies will perish;
all evildoers will be scattered.
You have exalted my horn like that of a wild ox;
fine oils have been poured on me.
My eyes have seen the defeat of my adversaries;
my ears have heard the rout of my wicked foes.
The righteous will flourish like a palm tree,
they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;
planted in the house of the Lord,
they will flourish in the courts of our God.
They will still bear fruit in old age,
they will stay fresh and green,
proclaiming, “The Lord is upright;
he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.”

A stupid person does not know,
a fool does not understand this:
though the wicked sprout like grass
and all evildoers flourish,
they will be eternally destroyed.
But you, Lord, are exalted forever.
For indeed, Lord, your enemies—
indeed, your enemies will perish;
all evildoers will be scattered.
You have lifted up my horn
like that of a wild ox;
I have been anointed with the finest oil.
My eyes look at my enemies;
when evildoers rise against me,
my ears hear them.
The righteous thrive like a palm tree
and grow like a cedar tree in Lebanon.
Planted in the house of the Lord,
they thrive in the courts of our God.
They will still bear fruit in old age,
healthy and green,
to declare, “The Lord is just;
he is my rock,
and there is no unrighteousness in him.”

NLTNew Living Translation
Only a simpleton would not know,
and only a fool would not understand this:
Though the wicked sprout like weeds
and evildoers flourish,
they will be destroyed forever.
But you, O Lord, will be exalted forever.
Your enemies, Lord, will surely perish;
all evildoers will be scattered.
But you have made me as strong as a wild ox.
You have anointed me with the finest oil.
My eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies;
my ears have heard the defeat of my wicked opponents.
But the godly will flourish like palm trees
and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon.
For they are transplanted to the Lord’s own house.
They flourish in the courts of our God.
Even in old age they will still produce fruit;
they will remain vital and green.
They will declare, “The Lord is just!
He is my rock!
There is no evil in him!”

The brutish man does not know,
and the fool cannot understand this.
When the wicked flourish like grass
and all the workers of evil blossom,
it is so they can be destroyed forever.
But you are on high forever, O Yahweh.
For behold, your enemies, O Yahweh,
for behold, your enemies will perish.
All the workers of evil will be scattered.
But you have exalted my horn like that of a wild ox;
you have anointed me with fresh oil.
And so my eye looks on my enemies.
My ears hear those evildoers who rise up against me.
The righteous will flourish like the date palm.
They will grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
Planted in the house of Yahweh,
they will flourish in the courts of our God.
They will still prosper in old age.
They will be fat and luxuriant,
to declare that Yahweh is upright.
He is my rock, and there is no injustice in him.

KJV 1900King James Version
A brutish man knoweth not;
Neither doth a fool understand this.
When the wicked spring as the grass,
And when all the workers of iniquity do flourish;
It is that they shall be destroyed for ever:
But thou, Lord, art most high for evermore.
For, lo, thine enemies, O Lord,
For, lo, thine enemies shall perish;
All the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.
But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn:
I shall be anointed with fresh oil.
Mine eye also shall see my desire on mine enemies,
And mine ears shall hear my desire of the wicked that rise up against me.
The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree:
He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
Those that be planted in the house of the Lord
Shall flourish in the courts of our God.
They shall still bring forth fruit in old age;
They shall be fat and flourishing;
To shew that the Lord is upright:
He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
