  2. 7 Or “for.”
  3. 8 Heb “they consult [with] a heart together.”
  4. 9 Heb “cut a covenant.”
  5. 10 The words “it includes” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.
  6. 11 The Hagrites are also mentioned in 1 Chr 5:10, 19–20.
  7. 12 Some identify Gebal with the Phoenician coastal city of Byblos (see Ezek 27:9, where the name is spelled differently), though others locate this site south of the Dead Sea (see 148 גְּבַל; גְּבַל).
  8. 13 For location see ; ; ; ; .
  9. 14 Heb “they are an arm for the sons of Lot.” The “arm” is here a symbol of military might. The descendants of Lot were the Moabites and Ammonites.

“Come,” they say, “let us wipe out Israel as a nation.

We will destroy the very memory of its existence.”

Moabites and Hagrites;

Gebalites, Ammonites, and Amalekites;

and people from Philistia and Tyre.

Assyria has joined them, too,

and is allied with the descendants of Lot.

They say, “Come, let us annihilate them from being a nation,

so that the name of Israel will be remembered no more.”

For they have consulted together with a unified purpose.

They have made a covenant against you:

the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,

Moab and the Hagrites,

Gebal and Ammon and Amalek,

Philistia, with the inhabitants of Tyre.

Assyria also has joined with them.

They provide help to the children of Lot. Selah

KJV 1900King James Version

They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation;

That the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.

For they have consulted together with one consent:

They are confederate against thee:

The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites;

Of Moab, and the Hagarenes;

Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek;

The Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre;

Assur also is joined with them:

They have holpen the children of Lot. Selah.
