Footnotes

  1. 1 Heb “for I in my integrity walk.”
  2. 2 Heb “evaluate my kidneys and my heart.” The kidneys and heart were viewed as the seat of one’s volition, conscience, and moral character.
  3. 3 Heb “for your faithfulness [is] before my eyes.”
  4. 4 Heb “and I walk about in your loyalty.” The psalmist’s awareness of the Lord’s faithfulness and … loyalty toward him motivates him to remain loyal to the Lord and to maintain his moral purity.
  5. 5 Heb “sit.”
  6. 6 Heb “go.” The psalmist uses the imperfect form of the verb to emphasize that he does not make a practice of associating with such people.
  7. 7 Heb “[those who] conceal themselves.”
  8. 8 Heb “assembly, company.”
  9. 9 Heb “sit.” The psalmist uses the imperfect form of the verb to emphasize that he does not make a practice of associating with such people.
  10. 10 Heb “I wash my hands in innocence.” The psalmist uses an image from cultic ritual to picture his moral lifestyle. The imperfect verbal emphasizes that this is his habit.
  11. 11 Heb “so I can go around your altar” (probably in ritual procession). Following the imperfect of the preceding line, the cohortative with vav (ו) conjunctive indicates purpose or result.
  12. 12 Heb “to cause to be heard the sound of thanksgiving.”
  13. 13 The two infinitival forms (both with prefixed preposition -לְ, lamed) give the purpose for his appearance at the altar.
  14. 14 Heb “the dwelling of your house.”
  15. 15 Heb “the place of the abode of your splendor.”
  16. 16 Heb “do not gather up my life with.”
  17. 17 Heb “or with men of bloodshed my life.” The verb is supplied; it is understood by ellipsis (see the preceding line).
  18. 18 Heb “who [have] in their hands evil.”
  19. 19 Heb “and their right hand is full of a bribe.”
  20. 20 Heb “and I in my integrity walk.” The psalmist uses the imperfect verbal form to emphasize this is his practice. The construction at the beginning of the verse (conjunction + pronoun) highlights the contrast between the psalmist and the sinners mentioned in vv. 9–10.
  21. 21 Or “redeem me.”
  22. 22 Heb “my foot stands in a level place.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version

Vindicate me, O Lord,

for I have walked in my integrity,

and I have trusted in the Lord without wavering.

Prove me, O Lord, and try me;

test my heart and my mind.

For your steadfast love is before my eyes,

and I walk in your faithfulness.

I do not sit with men of falsehood,

nor do I consort with hypocrites.

I hate the assembly of evildoers,

and I will not sit with the wicked.

I wash my hands in innocence

and go around your altar, O Lord,

proclaiming thanksgiving aloud,

and telling all your wondrous deeds.

O Lord, I love the habitation of your house

and the place where your glory dwells.

Do not sweep my soul away with sinners,

nor my life with bloodthirsty men,

in whose hands are evil devices,

and whose right hands are full of bribes.

But as for me, I shall walk in my integrity;

redeem me, and be gracious to me.

My foot stands on level ground;

in the great assembly I will bless the Lord.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Vindicate me, Lord,

for I have led a blameless life;

I have trusted in the Lord

and have not faltered.

Test me, Lord, and try me,

examine my heart and my mind;

for I have always been mindful of your unfailing love

and have lived in reliance on your faithfulness.

I do not sit with the deceitful,

nor do I associate with hypocrites.

I abhor the assembly of evildoers

and refuse to sit with the wicked.

I wash my hands in innocence,

and go about your altar, Lord,

proclaiming aloud your praise

and telling of all your wonderful deeds.

Lord, I love the house where you live,

the place where your glory dwells.

Do not take away my soul along with sinners,

my life with those who are bloodthirsty,

in whose hands are wicked schemes,

whose right hands are full of bribes.

I lead a blameless life;

deliver me and be merciful to me.

My feet stand on level ground;

in the great congregation I will praise the Lord.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Vindicate me, Lord,

because I have lived with integrity

and have trusted in the Lord without wavering.

Test me, Lord, and try me;

examine my heart and mind.

For your faithful love guides me,

and I live by your truth.

I do not sit with the worthless

or associate with hypocrites.

I hate a crowd of evildoers,

and I do not sit with the wicked.

I wash my hands in innocence

and go around your altar, Lord,

raising my voice in thanksgiving

and telling about your wondrous works.

Lord, I love the house where you dwell,

the place where your glory resides.

Do not destroy me along with sinners,

or my life along with men of bloodshed

in whose hands are evil schemes

and whose right hands are filled with bribes.

But I live with integrity;

redeem me and be gracious to me.

My foot stands on level ground;

I will bless the Lord in the assemblies.

NLTNew Living Translation

Declare me innocent, O Lord,

for I have acted with integrity;

I have trusted in the Lord without wavering.

Put me on trial, Lord, and cross-examine me.

Test my motives and my heart.

For I am always aware of your unfailing love,

and I have lived according to your truth.

I do not spend time with liars

or go along with hypocrites.

I hate the gatherings of those who do evil,

and I refuse to join in with the wicked.

I wash my hands to declare my innocence.

I come to your altar, O Lord,

singing a song of thanksgiving

and telling of all your wonders.

I love your sanctuary, Lord,

the place where your glorious presence dwells.

Don’t let me suffer the fate of sinners.

Don’t condemn me along with murderers.

Their hands are dirty with evil schemes,

and they constantly take bribes.

But I am not like that; I live with integrity.

So redeem me and show me mercy.

Now I stand on solid ground,

and I will publicly praise the Lord.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Judge me, O Yahweh, because I have walked in my integrity,

and I have trusted Yahweh and not wavered.

Prove me, O Yahweh, and test me.

Try my innermost being and my mind.

Because your loyal love is before my eyes,

and I walk about in your faithfulness.

I do not sit with deceitful people,

nor will I go about with hypocrites.

I hate the crowd of evildoers,

and with the wicked I will not sit.

I will wash my hands in innocence,

and I will walk about your altar, O Yahweh,

to declare with a voice of thanksgiving,

and tell of all your wondrous deeds.

O Yahweh, I love the dwelling of your house,

and the place where your glory abides.

Do not destroy me with the sinners,

nor my life with men of bloodshed,

in whose hands is an evil plan,

and whose right hand is full of bribes.

But as for me, I will walk in my integrity.

Redeem me and be gracious to me.

My foot stands on level ground.

In assemblies I will bless Yahweh.

KJV 1900King James Version

Judge me, O Lord; for I have walked in mine integrity:

I have trusted also in the Lord; therefore I shall not slide.

Examine me, O Lord, and prove me;

Try my reins and my heart.

For thy lovingkindness is before mine eyes:

And I have walked in thy truth.

I have not sat with vain persons,

Neither will I go in with dissemblers.

I have hated the congregation of evil doers;

And will not sit with the wicked.

I will wash mine hands in innocency:

So will I compass thine altar, O Lord:

That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving,

And tell of all thy wondrous works.

Lord, I have loved the habitation of thy house,

And the place where thine honour dwelleth.

Gather not my soul with sinners,

Nor my life with bloody men:

In whose hands is mischief,

And their right hand is full of bribes.

But as for me, I will walk in mine integrity:

Redeem me, and be merciful unto me.

My foot standeth in an even place:

In the congregations will I bless the Lord.
