A song of ascents.17

123:1I look up1 toward you,

the one enthroned2 in heaven.

123:2Look, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master,

so my eyes will look to the Lord, our God, until he shows us favor.

Footnotes

  1. 17 The precise significance of this title, which appears in Pss 120–134, is unclear. Perhaps worshipers recited these psalms when they ascended the road to Jerusalem to celebrate annual religious festivals. For a discussion of their background see L. C. Allen, Psalms 101–150(), .
  2. 1 Heb “I lift my eyes.”
  3. 2 Heb “sitting.” The Hebrew verb יָשַׁב (yashav) is here used metonymically of “sitting enthroned” (see Pss 9:7; 29:10; 55:19; 102:12).
  4. 3 Servants look to their master for food, shelter, and other basic needs.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

A Song of Ascents.

To you I lift up my eyes,

O you who are enthroned in the heavens!

Behold, as the eyes of servants

look to the hand of their master,

as the eyes of a maidservant

to the hand of her mistress,

so our eyes look to the Lord our God,

till he has mercy upon us.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

A song of ascents.

I lift up my eyes to you,

to you who sit enthroned in heaven.

As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master,

as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress,

so our eyes look to the Lord our God,

till he shows us his mercy.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

A song of ascents.

I lift my eyes to you,

the one enthroned in heaven.

Like a servant’s eyes on his master’s hand,

like a servant girl’s eyes on her mistress’s hand,

so our eyes are on the Lord our God

until he shows us favor.

NLTNew Living Translation

A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem.

I lift my eyes to you,

O God, enthroned in heaven.

We keep looking to the Lord our God for his mercy,

just as servants keep their eyes on their master,

as a slave girl watches her mistress for the slightest signal.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

A song of ascents.

I lift up my eyes to you,

the one enthroned in the heavens.

Behold, as the eyes of servants

look to the hand of their master,

as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,

so our eyes look to Yahweh our God,

until he is gracious to us.

KJV 1900King James Version

A Song of degrees.

Unto thee lift I up mine eyes,

O thou that dwellest in the heavens.

Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters,

And as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress;

So our eyes wait upon the Lord our God,

Until that he have mercy upon us.
