Footnotes

  1. 3 For location see ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; .
  2. 4 Heb “Jerusalem, which is built like a city which is joined to her together.” The meaning of the Hebrew text is unclear. Many regard this as a description of the compact way in which the city was designed or constructed. The translation assumes an emendation of the verb חֻבְּרָה (khubbérah, “is joined”) to a noun חֶבְרָה (khevrah, “association; company”). The text then reads literally, “Jerusalem, which is built like a city which has a company together.” This in turn can be taken as a reference to Jerusalem’s role as a city where people congregated for religious festivals and other civic occasions (see vv. 4–5).
  3. 5 Or “went up.”
  4. 6 Heb “which is where the tribes go up.”
  5. 7 Heb “[it is] a statute for Israel to give thanks to the name of the Lord.”
  6. 8 Or “for.”
  7. 9 Or “sat.”
  8. 10 Heb “Indeed, there they sit [on] thrones for judgment, [on] thrones [belonging] to the house of David.”

Jerusalem—built as a city

that is bound firmly together,

to which the tribes go up,

the tribes of the Lord,

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Jerusalem is built like a city

that is closely compacted together.

That is where the tribes go up—

the tribes of the Lord—

to praise the name of the Lord

according to the statute given to Israel.

There stand the thrones for judgment,

the thrones of the house of David.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Jerusalem, built as a city should be,

solidly united,

where the tribes, the Lord’s tribes, go up

to give thanks to the name of the Lord.

(This is an ordinance for Israel.)

There, thrones for judgment are placed,

thrones of the house of David.

NLTNew Living Translation

Jerusalem is a well-built city;

its seamless walls cannot be breached.

All the tribes of Israel—the Lord’s people—

make their pilgrimage here.

They come to give thanks to the name of the Lord,

as the law requires of Israel.

Here stand the thrones where judgment is given,

the thrones of the dynasty of David.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Jerusalem that is built

as a city that is joined together,

where the tribes go up,

the tribes of Yah as a testimony for Israel,

to give thanks to the name of Yahweh.

For there the thrones sit for judgment,

thrones of David’s house.

KJV 1900King James Version
