Footnotes

  1. 1 Heb “in the ones saying to me.” After the verb שָׂמַח (samakh), the preposition בְּ (bet) usually introduces the reason for joy.
  2. 2 Or “were.”
  3. 3 For location see ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; .
  4. 4 Heb “Jerusalem, which is built like a city which is joined to her together.” The meaning of the Hebrew text is unclear. Many regard this as a description of the compact way in which the city was designed or constructed. The translation assumes an emendation of the verb חֻבְּרָה (khubbérah, “is joined”) to a noun חֶבְרָה (khevrah, “association; company”). The text then reads literally, “Jerusalem, which is built like a city which has a company together.” This in turn can be taken as a reference to Jerusalem’s role as a city where people congregated for religious festivals and other civic occasions (see vv. 4–5).
  5. 5 Or “went up.”
  6. 6 Heb “which is where the tribes go up.”
  7. 7 Heb “[it is] a statute for Israel to give thanks to the name of the Lord.”
  8. 8 Or “for.”
  9. 9 Or “sat.”
  10. 10 Heb “Indeed, there they sit [on] thrones for judgment, [on] thrones [belonging] to the house of David.”
  11. 11 Heb “ask [for].”
  12. 12 Or “be secure.”
  13. 13 or “security.”
  14. 14 The psalmist uses second feminine singular pronominal forms to address personified Jerusalem.
  15. 15 Heb “I will seek good for you.” The psalmist will seek Jerusalem’s “good” through prayer.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

I was glad when they said to me,

“Let us go to the house of the Lord!”

Our feet have been standing

within your gates, O Jerusalem!

Jerusalem—built as a city

that is bound firmly together,

to which the tribes go up,

the tribes of the Lord,

as was decreed for Israel,

to give thanks to the name of the Lord.

There thrones for judgment were set,

the thrones of the house of David.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem!

“May they be secure who love you!

Peace be within your walls

and security within your towers!”

For my brothers and companions’ sake

I will say, “Peace be within you!”

For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,

I will seek your good.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

I rejoiced with those who said to me,

“Let us go to the house of the Lord.”

Our feet are standing

in your gates, Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is built like a city

that is closely compacted together.

That is where the tribes go up—

the tribes of the Lord—

to praise the name of the Lord

according to the statute given to Israel.

There stand the thrones for judgment,

the thrones of the house of David.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:

“May those who love you be secure.

May there be peace within your walls

and security within your citadels.”

For the sake of my family and friends,

I will say, “Peace be within you.”

For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,

I will seek your prosperity.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

I rejoiced with those who said to me,

“Let’s go to the house of the Lord.”

Our feet were standing

within your gates, Jerusalem—

Jerusalem, built as a city should be,

solidly united,

where the tribes, the Lord’s tribes, go up

to give thanks to the name of the Lord.

(This is an ordinance for Israel.)

There, thrones for judgment are placed,

thrones of the house of David.

Pray for the well-being of Jerusalem:

“May those who love you be secure;

may there be peace within your walls,

security within your fortresses.”

Because of my brothers and friends,

I will say, “May peace be in you.”

Because of the house of the Lord our God,

I will pursue your prosperity.

NLTNew Living Translation

I was glad when they said to me,

“Let us go to the house of the Lord.”

And now here we are,

standing inside your gates, O Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is a well-built city;

its seamless walls cannot be breached.

All the tribes of Israel—the Lord’s people—

make their pilgrimage here.

They come to give thanks to the name of the Lord,

as the law requires of Israel.

Here stand the thrones where judgment is given,

the thrones of the dynasty of David.

Pray for peace in Jerusalem.

May all who love this city prosper.

O Jerusalem, may there be peace within your walls

and prosperity in your palaces.

For the sake of my family and friends, I will say,

“May you have peace.”

For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,

I will seek what is best for you, O Jerusalem.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

I rejoiced in those who said to me,

“Let us go to the house of Yahweh.”

Our feet are standing

within your gates, O Jerusalem—

Jerusalem that is built

as a city that is joined together,

where the tribes go up,

the tribes of Yah as a testimony for Israel,

to give thanks to the name of Yahweh.

For there the thrones sit for judgment,

thrones of David’s house.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:

“May those who love you be at ease.

May peace be within your walls,

security within your palaces.”

For the sake of my brothers and my friends,

I will say, “Peace be within you.”

For the sake of the house of Yahweh our God,

I will seek your good.

KJV 1900King James Version

I was glad when they said unto me,

Let us go into the house of the Lord.

Our feet shall stand

Within thy gates, O Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is builded

As a city that is compact together:

Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord,

Unto the testimony of Israel,

To give thanks unto the name of the Lord.

For there are set thrones of judgment,

The thrones of the house of David.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:

They shall prosper that love thee.

Peace be within thy walls,

And prosperity within thy palaces.

For my brethren and companions’ sakes,

I will now say, Peace be within thee.

Because of the house of the Lord our God

I will seek thy good.
