116:10I had faith when I said,
“I am severely oppressed.”
116:11I rashly declared,16
“All men are liars.”
116:12How can I repay the Lord
for all his acts of kindness to me?
116:13I will celebrate my deliverance,17
and call on the name of the Lord.
116:14I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
before all his people.
116:15The Lord values
the lives of his faithful followers.18
116:16Yes, Lord! I am indeed your servant;
I am your lowest slave.19
You saved me from death.20
116:17I will present a thank offering to you,
and call on the name of the Lord.
116:18I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
before all his people,
116:19in the courts of the Lord’s temple,
in your midst, O Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord!
Footnotes
- 16 Heb “I said in my haste.”
- 17 Heb “a cup of deliverance I will lift up.” Perhaps this alludes to a drink offering the psalmist will present as he thanks the Lord for his deliverance. See v. 17.
- 18 Heb “precious in the eyes of the Lord [is] the death of his godly ones.” The point is not that God delights in or finds satisfaction in the death of his followers! The psalmist, who has been delivered from death, affirms that the life-threatening experiences of God’s followers get God’s attention, just as a precious or rare object would attract someone’s eye. See Ps 72:14 for a similar expression of this belief.
- 19 Heb “I am your servant, the son of your female servant.” The phrase “son of a female servant” (see also Ps 86:16) is used of a son born to a secondary wife or concubine (Exod 23:12). In some cases the child’s father is the master of the house (see Gen 21:10, 13; Judg 9:18). The use of the expression here certainly does not imply that the Lord has such a secondary wife or concubine! It is used metaphorically and idiomatically to emphasize the psalmist’s humility before the Lord and his status as the Lord’s servant.
- 20 Heb “you have loosed my bonds.” In this context the imagery refers to deliverance from death (see v. 3).

I believed, even when I spoke:
“I am greatly afflicted”;
I said in my alarm,
“All mankind are liars.”
What shall I render to the Lord
for all his benefits to me?
I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call on the name of the Lord,
I will pay my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.
Precious in the sight of the Lord
is the death of his saints.
O Lord, I am your servant;
I am your servant, the son of your maidservant.
You have loosed my bonds.
I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving
and call on the name of the Lord.
I will pay my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people,
in the courts of the house of the Lord,
in your midst, O Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord!

I trusted in the Lord when I said,
“I am greatly afflicted”;
in my alarm I said,
“Everyone is a liar.”
What shall I return to the Lord
for all his goodness to me?
I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call on the name of the Lord.
I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.
Precious in the sight of the Lord
is the death of his faithful servants.
Truly I am your servant, Lord;
I serve you just as my mother did;
you have freed me from my chains.
I will sacrifice a thank offering to you
and call on the name of the Lord.
I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people,
in the courts of the house of the Lord—
in your midst, Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord.

I believed in you, so I said,
“I am deeply troubled, Lord.”
In my anxiety I cried out to you,
“These people are all liars!”
What can I offer the Lord
for all he has done for me?
I will lift up the cup of salvation
and praise the Lord’s name for saving me.
I will keep my promises to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.
The Lord cares deeply
when his loved ones die.
O Lord, I am your servant;
yes, I am your servant, born into your household;
you have freed me from my chains.
I will offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving
and call on the name of the Lord.
I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people—
in the house of the Lord
in the heart of Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord!

I believed when I spoke,
“I am afflicted greatly.”
I said in my haste,
“Everyone is a liar.”
What shall I give back to Yahweh
for all his benefits to me?
I will lift up the cup of salvation
and proclaim the name of Yahweh.
I will pay my vows made to Yahweh
in the presence of all his people.
Costly in Yahweh’s view is
the death of his faithful ones.
Ah, Yahweh, I am indeed your servant;
I am your servant, the child of your maidservant.
You have loosed my bonds.
I will offer to you a sacrifice of thanksgiving,

in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.
