Footnotes

  1. 1 Or perhaps “confident”; Heb “my heart is steadfast.” The “heart” is viewed here as the seat of the psalmist’s volition and/or emotions.
  2. 2 Heb “also my glory,” but this makes little sense in the context. Some view the term כָּבוֹד (“glory”) here as a metonymy for man’s inner being (see 459 II כָּבוֹד 5), but it is preferable to emend the form to כְּבֵדִי (kévodiy, “my liver”). Like the heart, the liver is viewed as the seat of one’s emotions. See also Pss 16:9; 30:12; 57:9; as well as H. W. Wolff, Anthropology of the Old Testament, 64, and M. Dahood, Psalms (), 3:. For an Ugaritic example of the heart/liver as the source of joy, see G. R. Driver, Canaanite Myths and Legends, 47–48: “her [Anat’s] liver swelled with laughter, her heart was filled with joy, the liver of Anat with triumph.”
  3. 3 1007 שַׁחַר takes “dawn” as an adverbial accusative, though others understand it as a personified direct object. “Dawn” is used metaphorically for the time of deliverance and vindication the psalmist anticipates. When salvation “dawns,” the psalmist will “wake up” in praise.
  4. 4 Or “the peoples.”
  5. 5 Heb “for great upon the sky [or “heavens”] [is] your loyal love.”
  6. 6 Or “be exalted.”
  7. 7 Heb “over all the earth [be] your splendor.” Though no verb appears, the tone of the statement is a prayer or wish. (Note the imperative form in the preceding line.)

My heart, O God, is steadfast;

I will sing and make music with all my soul.

Awake, harp and lyre!

I will awaken the dawn.

I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;

I will sing of you among the peoples.

For great is your love, higher than the heavens;

your faithfulness reaches to the skies.

let your glory be over all the earth.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

My heart is confident, God;

I will sing; I will sing praises

with the whole of my being.

Wake up, harp and lyre!

I will wake up the dawn.

I will praise you, Lord, among the peoples;

I will sing praises to you among the nations.

For your faithful love is higher than the heavens,

and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.

God, be exalted above the heavens,

and let your glory be over the whole earth.

NLTNew Living Translation

My heart is confident in you, O God;

no wonder I can sing your praises with all my heart!

Wake up, lyre and harp!

I will wake the dawn with my song.

I will thank you, Lord, among all the people.

I will sing your praises among the nations.

For your unfailing love is higher than the heavens.

Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.

Be exalted, O God, above the highest heavens.

May your glory shine over all the earth.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

My heart is steadfast, O God.

I will sing and give praise, even with my glory.

Awake, harp and lyre.

I will awake the dawn.

I will give you thanks among the peoples, O Yahweh;

I will give you praise among the nations,

because your loyal love is great above the heavens,

and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.

Be exalted above the heavens, O God,

and let your glory be above all the earth,

KJV 1900King James Version

O God, my heart is fixed;

I will sing and give praise,

Even with my glory.

Awake, psaltery and harp:

I myself will awake early.

I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people:

And I will sing praises unto thee among the nations.

For thy mercy is great above the heavens:

And thy truth reacheth unto the clouds.

Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens:

And thy glory above all the earth;
