Footnotes

  1. 6 Heb “and their soul in them fainted.”
  2. 7 A level road. See Jer 31:9.
  3. 8 Heb “and [for] his amazing deeds for the sons of man.”
  4. 9 Heb “[the] longing throat.” The noun נֶפֶשׁ (nefesh), which frequently refers to one’s very being or soul, here probably refers to one’s parched “throat” (note the parallelism with נֶפֱשׁ רְעֵבָה, nefesh ré’evah, “hungry throat”).
  5. 10 Heb “and [the] hungry throat he has filled [with] good.”

to a city where they could settle.

Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love

and his wonderful deeds for mankind,

to go to a city where they could live.

Let them give thanks to the Lord

for his faithful love

NLTNew Living Translation

Some wandered in the wilderness,

lost and homeless.

Hungry and thirsty,

they nearly died.

“Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble,

and he rescued them from their distress.

He led them straight to safety,

to a city where they could live.

Let them praise the Lord for his great love

and for the wonderful things he has done for them.

For he satisfies the thirsty

and fills the hungry with good things.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

They wandered in the wilderness, in a desert.

They could find no way to a city to inhabit.

Hungry and thirsty,

their soul grew faint within them.

Then they cried out to Yahweh in their trouble.

He delivered them from their distresses

and led them by a straight way

to get to a city to inhabit.

Let them give thanks to Yahweh for his loyal love,

and his wonderful deeds for the children of humankind,

for he satisfies the longing soul,

and the hungry soul he fills with good.

KJV 1900King James Version

They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way;

They found no city to dwell in.

Hungry and thirsty,

Their soul fainted in them.

Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble,

And he delivered them out of their distresses.

And he led them forth by the right way,

That they might go to a city of habitation.

Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness,

And for his wonderful works to the children of men!

For he satisfieth the longing soul,

And filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
