107:25He gave the order for a windstorm,28
and it stirred up the waves of the sea.29
107:26They30 reached up to the sky,
then dropped into the depths.
The sailors’ strength31 left them32 because the danger was so great.33
107:27They swayed34 and staggered like a drunk,
and all their skill proved ineffective.35
107:28They cried out to the Lord in their distress;
he delivered them from their troubles.
Footnotes
- 28 Heb “he spoke and caused to stand a stormy wind.”
- 29 Heb “and it stirred up its [i.e., the sea’s, see v. 23] waves.”
- 30 That is, the waves (see v. 25).
- 31 Heb “their being”; traditionally “their soul” (referring to that of the sailors). This is sometimes translated “courage” (cf. , ).
- 32 Or “melted.”
- 33 Heb “from danger.”
- 34 Only here does the Hebrew verb חָגַג (khagag; normally meaning “to celebrate”) carry the nuance “to sway.”
- 35 The Hitpael of בָלַע (vala’) occurs only here in the OT. Traditionally the form is derived from the verbal root בלע (“to swallow”), but III בלע understands a homonym here with the meaning “to be confused.”

For he commanded and raised the stormy wind,
which lifted up the waves of the sea.
They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths;
their courage melted away in their evil plight;
they reeled and staggered like drunken men
and were at their wits’ end.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.

For he spoke and stirred up a tempest
that lifted high the waves.
They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;
in their peril their courage melted away.
They reeled and staggered like drunkards;
they were at their wits’ end.
Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
and he brought them out of their distress.

He spoke and raised a stormy wind
that stirred up the waves of the sea.
Rising up to the sky, sinking down to the depths,
their courage melting away in anguish,
they reeled and staggered like a drunkard,
and all their skill was useless.
Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
and he brought them out of their distress.

He spoke, and the winds rose,
stirring up the waves.
Their ships were tossed to the heavens
and plunged again to the depths;
the sailors cringed in terror.
They reeled and staggered like drunkards
and were at their wits’ end.
“Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress.

For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind,
Which lifteth up the waves thereof.
They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths:
Their soul is melted because of trouble.
They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man,
And are at their wits’ end.
Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble,
And he bringeth them out of their distresses.
