Read in Logos
Psalm 104:25–26: Here is the sea, great and wide, which teems with creatures innumerable, living things both small and great. There go the ships, and Leviathan, which you formed to play in it.

Footnotes

  1. 32 Heb “this [is] the sea, great and broad of hands [i.e., “sides” or “shores”].”
  2. 33 Heb “where [there are] swimming things, and without number.”
  3. 34 Heb “[and] this Leviathan, [which] you formed to play in it.” Elsewhere Leviathan is a multiheaded sea monster that symbolizes forces hostile to God (see Ps 74:14; Isa 27:1), but here it appears to be an actual marine creature created by God, probably some type of whale.
  4. 35 Heb “All of them.” The pronoun “them” refers not just to the sea creatures mentioned in vv. 25–26, but to all living things (see v. 24). This has been specified in the translation as “all of your creatures” for clarity.
  5. 36 Heb “to give their food in its time.”
  6. 37 Heb “they are satisfied [with] good.”

Here is the sea, great and wide,

which teems with creatures innumerable,

living things both small and great.

There go the ships,

When you give it to them, they gather it up;

when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

There is the sea, vast and spacious,

teeming with creatures beyond number—

living things both large and small.

There the ships go to and fro,

and Leviathan, which you formed to frolic there.

All creatures look to you

to give them their food at the proper time.

When you give it to them,

they gather it up;

when you open your hand,

they are satisfied with good things.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Here is the sea, vast and wide,

teeming with creatures beyond number—

living things both large and small.

There the ships move about,

and Leviathan, which you formed to play there.

All of them wait for you

to give them their food at the right time.

When you give it to them,

they gather it;

when you open your hand,

they are satisfied with good things.

NLTNew Living Translation

Here is the ocean, vast and wide,

teeming with life of every kind,

both large and small.

See the ships sailing along,

and Leviathan, which you made to play in the sea.

They all depend on you

to give them food as they need it.

When you supply it, they gather it.

You open your hand to feed them,

and they are richly satisfied.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

This is the great and wide sea,

in which are moving animals without number,

living things small and great.

There the ships sail.

Leviathan is there that you formed to play with.

They all wait for you

to give them their food at the proper time.

You give to them; they gather it.

You open your hand, they are filled with what is good.

KJV 1900King James Version

So is this great and wide sea,

Wherein are things creeping innumerable,

Both small and great beasts.

There go the ships:

There is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein.

These wait all upon thee;

That thou mayest give them their meat in due season.

That thou givest them they gather:

Thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good.
