Further Reforms by Nehemiah

13:1On that day the book of Moses was read aloud in the hearing1 of the people. They found2 written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite may ever enter the assembly of God, 13:2for they had not met the Israelites with food3 and water, but instead had hired Balaam to curse them. (Our God, however, turned the curse into blessing.)

  3. 3 Heb “bread.” The Hebrew term is generic here, however, referring to more than bread alone.

On that day the book of Moses was read in the hearing of the people and it was found written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever come into the assembly of God because they did not come to meet the Israelites with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them in order to curse them—but our God changed the curse into a blessing.

On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that the Ammonite and the Moabite should not come into the congregation of God for ever; Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, that he should curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing.
