4:9Jerusalem, why are you25 now shouting so loudly?26
Has your king disappeared?27
Has your wise leader28 been destroyed?
Is this why29 pain grips30 you as if you were a woman in labor?
4:10Twist and strain,31 Daughter Zion, as if you were in labor!
For you will leave the city
and live in the open field.
You will go to Babylon,
but there you will be rescued.
There the Lord will deliver32 you
from the power33 of your enemies.
Footnotes
- 25 The Hebrew form is feminine singular, indicating that Jerusalem, personified as a young woman, is now addressed (see v. 10). In v. 8 the tower/fortress was addressed with masculine forms, so there is clearly a shift in addressee here. “Jerusalem” has been supplied in the translation at the beginning of v. 9 to make this shift apparent.
- 26 Heb “Now why are you shouting [with] a shout.”
- 27 Heb “Is there no king over you?”
- 28 Traditionally, “counselor” (cf. , , , , ). This refers to the king mentioned in the previous line; the title points to the king’s roles as chief strategist and policy maker, both of which required extraordinary wisdom.
- 29 Heb “that.” The Hebrew particle כִּי (ki) is used here in a resultative sense; for this use see R. J. Williams, Hebrew Syntax, 73, §450.
- 30 Heb “grabs hold of, seizes.”
- 31 Or perhaps “scream”; , , “groan.”
- 32 Or “redeem” (, , , , ).
- 33 Heb “hand.” The Hebrew idiom is a metonymy for power or control.

Now why do you cry aloud?
Is there no king in you?
Has your counselor perished,
that pain seized you like a woman in labor?
Writhe and groan, O daughter of Zion,
like a woman in labor,
for now you shall go out from the city
and dwell in the open country;
you shall go to Babylon.
There you shall be rescued;
there the Lord will redeem you
from the hand of your enemies.

Why do you now cry aloud—
have you no king?
Has your ruler perished,
that pain seizes you like that of a woman in labor?
Writhe in agony, Daughter Zion,
like a woman in labor,
for now you must leave the city
to camp in the open field.
You will go to Babylon;
there you will be rescued.
There the Lord will redeem you
out of the hand of your enemies.

Now, why are you shouting loudly?
Is there no king with you?
Has your counselor perished
so that anguish grips you like a woman in labor?
Writhe and cry out, Daughter Zion,
like a woman in labor,
for now you will leave the city
and camp in the open fields.
You will go to Babylon;
there you will be rescued;

But why are you now screaming in terror?
Have you no king to lead you?
Have your wise people all died?
Pain has gripped you like a woman in childbirth.
Writhe and groan like a woman in labor,
you people of Jerusalem,
for now you must leave this city
to live in the open country.
You will soon be sent in exile
to distant Babylon.
But the Lord will rescue you there;
he will redeem you from the grip of your enemies.

Is there no king in you?

that pangs like a woman in labor have seized you?

KJV 1900King James Version
Now why dost thou cry out aloud?
Is there no king in thee?
Is thy counseller perished?
For pangs have taken thee as a woman in travail.
Be in pain, and labour to bring forth, O daughter of Zion, like a woman in travail:
For now shalt thou go forth out of the city, and thou shalt dwell in the field,
And thou shalt go even to Babylon; there shalt thou be delivered;
There the Lord shall redeem thee from the hand of thine enemies.
