3:7The prophets18 will be ashamed;

the omen readers will be humiliated.

All of them will cover their mouths,19

for they will receive no divine oracles.”20

3:8But I21 am full of the courage that the Lord’s Spirit gives,

and have a strong commitment to justice.22

This enables me to confront Jacob with its rebellion,

and Israel with its sin.23

Footnotes

  1. 18 Or “seers.”
  2. 19 Or “the mustache,” or perhaps “the beard.” Cf. , , “cover their lips.”
  3. 20 Heb “for there will be no answer from God.”
  4. 21 The prophet Micah speaks here and contrasts himself with the mercenaries just denounced by the Lord in the preceding verses.
  5. 22 Heb “am full of power, the Spirit of the Lord, and justice and strength.” The appositional phrase “the Spirit of the Lord” explains the source of the prophet’s power. The phrase “justice and strength” is understood here as a hendiadys, referring to the prophet’s strong sense of justice.
  6. 23 Heb “to declare to Jacob his rebellion and to Israel his sin.” The words “this enables me” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

to proclaim to Jacob his rebellion

and to Israel his sin.

I am filled with justice and strength

to boldly declare Israel’s sin and rebellion.

Then the seers will be disgraced,

and those practicing divination will be put to shame.

All of them will cover their lips,

for there is no reply from God.

But I, I am filled with power,

with the Spirit of Yahweh,

and with justice and might,

to declare to Jacob his rebellion,

and to Israel his sin.

KJV 1900King James Version

Then shall the seers be ashamed, and the diviners confounded:

Yea, they shall all cover their lips;

For there is no answer of God.

To declare unto Jacob his transgression,

And to Israel his sin.
