20:26It must not be this way among you! Instead whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, 20:27and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave38—20:28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom39 for many.”
Footnotes
- 38 See the note on the word “slave” in .
- 39 The Greek word for ransom (λύτρον, lutron) is found here and in Mark 10:45 and refers to the payment of a price in order to purchase the freedom of a slave. The idea of Jesus as the “ransom” is that he paid the price with his own life by standing in our place as a substitute, enduring the judgment that we deserved for sin.

But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
