11:21“Woe to you, Chorazin!35 Woe to you, Bethsaida! If36 the miracles37 done in you had been done in Tyre38 and Sidon,39 they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 11:22But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you! 11:23And you, Capernaum,40 will you be exalted to heaven?41 No, you will be thrown down to Hades!42 For if the miracles done among you had been done in Sodom, it would have continued to this day.
Footnotes
- 35 Chorazin was a town of Galilee that was probably fairly small in contrast to Bethsaida and is otherwise unattested. Bethsaida was declared a polis by the tetrarch Herod Philip, sometime after a.d. 30.
- 36 This introduces a second class (contrary to fact) condition in the Greek text.
- 37 Or “powerful deeds.”
- 38 For location see ; ; ; ; .
- 39 Tyre and Sidon are two other notorious OT cities (Isa 23; Jer 25:22; 47:4). The remark is a severe rebuke, in effect: “Even the sinners of the old era would have responded to the proclamation of the kingdom, unlike you!” For location see ; ; .
- 40 Capernaum was a town on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, 680 ft (204 m) below sea level. It was a major trade and economic center in the North Galilean region. For location see ; ; .
- 41 The interrogative particle introducing this question expects a negative reply.
- 42 In the OT, Hades was known as Sheol. It is the place where the unrighteous will reside (Luke 10:15; 16:23; Rev 20:13–14).

“What sorrow awaits you, Korazin and Bethsaida! For if the miracles I did in you had been done in wicked Tyre and Sidon, their people would have repented of their sins long ago, clothing themselves in burlap and throwing ashes on their heads to show their remorse. I tell you, Tyre and Sidon will be better off on judgment day than you.
“And you people of Capernaum, will you be honored in heaven? No, you will go down to the place of the dead. For if the miracles I did for you had been done in wicked Sodom, it would still be here today.

Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
