Gethsemane
14:32Then49 they went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus50 said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 14:33He took Peter, James,51 and John with him, and became very troubled and distressed. 14:34He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay alert.” 14:35Going a little farther, he threw himself to the ground and prayed that if it were possible the hour would pass from him. 14:36He said, “Abba,52 Father, all things are possible for you. Take this cup53 away from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” 14:37Then54 he came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you stay awake for one hour?
Footnotes
- 49 Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.
- 50 Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
- 51 Grk “and James,” but καί (kai) has not been translated since English normally uses a coordinating conjunction only between the last two elements in a series of three or more.
- 52 The word means “Father” in Aramaic.
- 53 This cup alludes to the wrath of God that Jesus would experience (in the form of suffering and death) for us. See Ps 11:6; 75:8–9; Isa 51:17, 19, 22 for this figure.
- 54 Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

Remain here and watch.” And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour?

NLTNew Living Translation
They went to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and Jesus said, “Sit here while I go and pray.” He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he became deeply troubled and distressed. He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
He went on a little farther and fell to the ground. He prayed that, if it were possible, the awful hour awaiting him might pass him by. “Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”
Then he returned and found the disciples asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour?

And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy; And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch. And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt. And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?
