Showing the Light

8:16“No one lights54 a lamp55 and then covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in can see the light.568:17For nothing is hidden57 that will not be revealed,58 and nothing concealed that will not be made known and brought to light. 8:18So listen carefully,59 for whoever has will be given more, but60 whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has61 will be taken from him.”

Footnotes

  1. 54 The participle ἅψας (hapsas) has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.
  2. 55 This is probably an ancient oil burning lamp or perhaps a candlestick. Jesus is comparing revelation to light, particularly the revelation of his ministry; see 1:78–79.
  3. 56 Or “its light,” if the Greek article is translated as a possessive pronoun (for such usage, cf. ).
  4. 57 Nothing is hidden. Light also exposes, and Jesus was suggesting that his teaching likewise revealed where people are and where they will be. Truth will be manifest in the future, just as it was declared by him then. Nothing will be concealed.
  5. 58 Or “disclosed.”
  6. 59 Or “Therefore pay close attention”; Grk “Take heed therefore how you hear.”
  7. 60 Grk “and.” Here καί (kai) has been translated as “but” to indicate the contrast present in this context.
  8. 61 The phrase what he thinks he has is important, because it is not what a person thinks he has that is important but whether he actually has something or not. Jesus describes the person who does not heed his word as having nothing. The person who has nothing loses even that which he thought was something but was not. In other words, he has absolutely nothing at all. Jesus’ teaching must be taken seriously.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

“No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light. Take care then how you hear, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.”

NIVNew International Version (2011)

“No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.”

CSBChristian Standard Bible

“No one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a basket or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in may see its light. For nothing is concealed that won’t be revealed, and nothing hidden that won’t be made known and brought to light. Therefore take care how you listen. For whoever has, more will be given to him; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.”

NLTNew Living Translation

“No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or hides it under a bed. A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house. For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all.

“So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them.”

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

“And no one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand, so that those who come in can see the light. For nothing is secret that will not become evident, and nothing hidden that will never be known and come to light. Therefore consider how you listen, for whoever has, to him more will be given, and whoever does not have, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away from him.”

KJV 1900King James Version

No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light. For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad. Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.
