Luke 5:5: And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.”

Footnotes

  1. 9 Or “let down.” The verb here is plural, so this is a command to all in the boat, not just Peter.
  2. 10 Grk “And Simon.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.
  3. 11 Grk “answering, Simon said.” This is redundant in contemporary English and has been simplified in the translation to “Simon answered.”
  4. 12 The word ἐπιστάτης is a term of respect for a person of high status (see L&N 87.50).
  5. 13 The expression “at your word,” which shows Peter’s obedience, stands first in the Greek clause for emphasis.
  6. 14 Or “let down.”
  7. 15 Grk “And when.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.
  8. 16 In context, this imperfect verb is best taken as an ingressive imperfect ( §338.1).
  9. 17 Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate consequential nature of the action.
  10. 18 That is, “they signaled by making gestures” (L&N 33.485).
  11. 19 This infinitive conveys the idea that the boats were at the point of sinking.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”

Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and let down your nets for a catch.”

“Master,” Simon replied, “we’ve worked hard all night long and caught nothing. But if you say so, I’ll let down the nets.”

When they did this, they caught a great number of fish, and their nets began to tear. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them; they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

NLTNew Living Translation

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”

“Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

And when he stopped speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered and said, “Master, although we worked hard through the whole night, we caught nothing. But at your word I will let down the nets.” And when they did this, they caught a very large number of fish, and their nets began to tear. And they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both the boats so that they began to sink.

KJV 1900King James Version

Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.
