The Call of the Disciples
5:1Now1 Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,2 and the crowd was pressing around him3 to hear the word of God. 5:2He4 saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. 5:3He got into5 one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then6 Jesus7 sat down8 and taught the crowds from the boat.
Footnotes
- 1 Grk “Now it happened that.” The introductory phrase ἐγένετο (egeneto, “it happened that”), common in Luke (69 times) and Acts (54 times), is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated.
- 2 The Lake of Gennesaret is another name for the Sea of Galilee. Cf. the parallel in Matt 4:18.
- 3 The image of the crowd pressing around him suggests the people leaning forward to catch Jesus’ every word.
- 4 Grk “And he.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.
- 5 Grk “Getting into”; the participle ἐμβάς (embas) has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.
- 6 Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.
- 7 Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
- 8 Grk “sitting down”; the participle καθίσας (kathisas) has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

NLTNew Living Translation
One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God. He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there.

And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
