Footnotes

  1. 29 Grk “whatever town you enter,” but this is more often expressed in English as “whenever you enter a town.”
  2. 30 Or “city.”
  3. 31 Grk “and they”; the referent (the people who live in the town) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
  4. 32 More discussion takes place concerning rejection (the people do not welcome you), as these verses lead into the condemnation of certain towns for their rejection of God’s kingdom.
  5. 33 The term πλατεῖα (plateia) refers to the “broad street,” so this refers to the main roads of the town.
  6. 34 Or “city.”
  7. 35 See Luke 9:5, where the verb is different but the meaning is the same. This was a sign of rejection.
  8. 36 Here ὑμῖν (humin) has been translated as a dative of disadvantage.
  9. 37 Or “has come near.” As in v. (see above), the combination of ἐγγίζω (engizō) with the preposition ἐπί (epi) is decisive in showing that the sense is “has come” (see ἐγγίζω 2, and W. R. Hutton, “The Kingdom of God Has Come,” 64 [Dec 1952]: 89–91).
  10. 38 The allusion to Sodom, the most wicked of OT cities from Gen 19:1–29, shows that to reject the current message is even more serious than the worst sins of the old era and will result in more severe punishment. The noun Sodom is in emphatic position in the Greek text.
  11. 39 Or “city.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version

But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’ I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’ I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

When you enter any town, and they don’t welcome you, go out into its streets and say, ‘We are wiping off even the dust of your town that clings to our feet as a witness against you. Know this for certain: The kingdom of God has come near.’ I tell you, on that day it will be more tolerable for Sodom than for that town.

NLTNew Living Translation

But if a town refuses to welcome you, go out into its streets and say, ‘We wipe even the dust of your town from our feet to show that we have abandoned you to your fate. And know this—the Kingdom of God is near!’ I assure you, even wicked Sodom will be better off than such a town on judgment day.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

But into whatever town you enter and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, “Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you! Nevertheless know this: that the kingdom of God has come near!” I tell you that it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town!

KJV 1900King James Version

But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say, Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.
