7:19The meat which touches anything ceremonially26 unclean must not be eaten; it must be burned up in the fire. As for ceremonially clean meat,27 everyone who is ceremonially clean may eat the meat. 7:20The person who eats meat from the peace offering sacrifice which belongs to the Lord while his uncleanness persists28 will be cut off from his people.297:21When a person touches anything unclean (whether human uncleanness, or an unclean animal, or an unclean detestable creature)30 and eats some of the meat of the peace offering sacrifice which belongs to the Lord, that person will be cut off from his people.’ ”31
Footnotes
- 26 The word “ceremonially” has been supplied in the translation both here and in the following sentence to clarify that the uncleanness involved is ritual or ceremonial in nature.
- 27 The Hebrew has simply “the flesh,” but this certainly refers to “clean” flesh in contrast to the unclean flesh in the first half of the verse.
- 28 Heb “and his unclean condition is on him.”
- 29 The exact meaning of this penalty clause is not certain. It could mean that he will be executed, whether by God or by man, he will be excommunicated from sanctuary worship and/or community benefits (cf. , ), or his line will be terminated by God (i.e., extirpation), etc. See J. E. Hartley, Leviticus (), ; J. Milgrom, Leviticus (), 1:; and B. A. Levine, Leviticus (), for further discussion.
- 30 For these categories of unclean animals see Lev 11.
- 31 For the interpretation of this last clause see the note on .

“Flesh that touches any unclean thing shall not be eaten. It shall be burned up with fire. All who are clean may eat flesh, but the person who eats of the flesh of the sacrifice of the Lord’s peace offerings while an uncleanness is on him, that person shall be cut off from his people. And if anyone touches an unclean thing, whether human uncleanness or an unclean beast or any unclean detestable creature, and then eats some flesh from the sacrifice of the Lord’s peace offerings, that person shall be cut off from his people.”

“ ‘Meat that touches anything ceremonially unclean must not be eaten; it must be burned up. As for other meat, anyone ceremonially clean may eat it. But if anyone who is unclean eats any meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the Lord, they must be cut off from their people. Anyone who touches something unclean—whether human uncleanness or an unclean animal or any unclean creature that moves along the ground—and then eats any of the meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the Lord must be cut off from their people.’ ”

“Meat that touches anything unclean must not be eaten; it is to be burned. Everyone who is clean may eat any other meat. But the one who eats meat from the Lord’s fellowship sacrifice while he is unclean, that person must be cut off from his people. If someone touches anything unclean, whether human uncleanness, an unclean animal, or any unclean, abhorrent creature, and eats meat from the Lord’s fellowship sacrifice, that person is to be cut off from his people.”

NLTNew Living Translation
“Meat that touches anything ceremonially unclean may not be eaten; it must be completely burned up. The rest of the meat may be eaten, but only by people who are ceremonially clean. If you are ceremonially unclean and you eat meat from a peace offering that was presented to the Lord, you will be cut off from the community. If you touch anything that is unclean (whether it is human defilement or an unclean animal or any other unclean, detestable thing) and then eat meat from a peace offering presented to the Lord, you will be cut off from the community.”

And the flesh that toucheth any unclean thing shall not be eaten; it shall be burnt with fire: and as for the flesh, all that be clean shall eat thereof. But the soul that eateth of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, that pertain unto the Lord, having his uncleanness upon him, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.
