The Grain Offering of the Common Person
6:14“ ‘This is the law of the grain offering. The sons of Aaron are to present it26 before the Lord in front of the altar, 6:15and the priest27 must take up with his hand some of the choice wheat flour of the grain offering28 and some of its olive oil, and all of the frankincense that is on the grain offering, and he must offer its memorial portion29 up in smoke on the altar30 as a soothing aroma to the Lord.316:16Aaron and his sons are to eat what is left over from it. It must be eaten unleavened in a holy place; they are to eat it in the courtyard of the Meeting Tent. 6:17It must not be baked with yeast.32 I have given it as their portion from my gifts. It is most holy,33 like the sin offering and the guilt offering. 6:18Every male among the sons of Aaron may eat it. It is a perpetual allotted portion34 throughout your generations35 from the gifts of the Lord. Anyone who touches these gifts36 must be holy.’ ”37
Footnotes
- 26 Heb “offering it, the sons of Aaron.” The verb is a Hiphil infinitive absolute, which is used here in place of the finite verb as either a jussive ( §113.cc, “let the sons of Aaron offer”) or more likely an injunctive in light of the verbs that follow ( 2: §123.v, “the sons of Aaron shall/must offer”).
- 27 Heb “and he”; the referent has been specified in the translation for clarity. The “he” refers to the officiating priest. A similar shift between singular and plural occurs in Lev 1:7–9, but see the note on and J. E. Hartley, Leviticus [], for the possibility of textual corruption.
- 28 Heb “shall take up from it with his hand some of the choice wheat flour of the grain offering.”
- 29 See the note on .
- 30 reading, which includes the locative ה (hey, translated “on” the altar), is preferred here. This is the normal construction with the verb “offer up in smoke” in Lev 1–7 (see the note on ).
- 31 Heb “and he shall offer up in smoke [on] the altar a soothing aroma, its memorial portion, to the Lord.”
- 32 Heb “It must not be baked leavened” (cf. Lev 2:11). The noun “leaven” is traditional in English versions (cf. , , , ), but “yeast” is more commonly used today.
- 33 Heb “holiness of holinesses [or holy of holies] it is”; cf. “most sacred.”
- 34 Or “a perpetual regulation”; cf. “a permanent ordinance”; “as their perpetual due.”
- 35 Heb “for your generations”; cf. “for the generations to come.”
- 36 Heb “touches them”; the referent has been specified in the translation for clarity. In this context “them” must refer to the “gifts” of the Lord.
- 37 Or “anyone/anything that touches them shall become holy” (J. Milgrom, Leviticus [], 1:). The question is whether this refers to the contagious nature of holy objects (cf. , , , , ) or whether it simply sets forth a demand that anyone who touches the holy gifts of the Lord must be a holy person (cf. ). See R. E. Averbeck, 2:.

“And this is the law of the grain offering. The sons of Aaron shall offer it before the Lord in front of the altar. And one shall take from it a handful of the fine flour of the grain offering and its oil and all the frankincense that is on the grain offering and burn this as its memorial portion on the altar, a pleasing aroma to the Lord. And the rest of it Aaron and his sons shall eat. It shall be eaten unleavened in a holy place. In the court of the tent of meeting they shall eat it. It shall not be baked with leaven. I have given it as their portion of my food offerings. It is a thing most holy, like the sin offering and the guilt offering. Every male among the children of Aaron may eat of it, as decreed forever throughout your generations, from the Lord’s food offerings. Whatever touches them shall become holy.”

NIVNew International Version (2011)
“ ‘These are the regulations for the grain offering: Aaron’s sons are to bring it before the Lord, in front of the altar. The priest is to take a handful of the finest flour and some olive oil, together with all the incense on the grain offering, and burn the memorial portion on the altar as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. Aaron and his sons shall eat the rest of it, but it is to be eaten without yeast in the sanctuary area; they are to eat it in the courtyard of the tent of meeting. It must not be baked with yeast; I have given it as their share of the food offerings presented to me. Like the sin offering and the guilt offering, it is most holy. Any male descendant of Aaron may eat it. For all generations to come it is his perpetual share of the food offerings presented to the Lord. Whatever touches them will become holy.’ ”

“Now this is the law of the grain offering: Aaron’s sons will present it before the Lord in front of the altar. The priest is to remove a handful of fine flour and olive oil from the grain offering, with all the frankincense that is on the offering, and burn its memorial portion on the altar as a pleasing aroma to the Lord. Aaron and his sons may eat the rest of it. It is to be eaten in the form of unleavened bread in a holy place; they are to eat it in the courtyard of the tent of meeting. It must not be baked with yeast; I have assigned it as their portion from my food offerings. It is especially holy, like the sin offering and the guilt offering. Any male among Aaron’s descendants may eat it. It is a permanent portion throughout your generations from the food offerings to the Lord. Anything that touches the offerings will become holy.”

NLTNew Living Translation
“These are the instructions regarding the grain offering. Aaron’s sons must present this offering to the Lord in front of the altar. The priest on duty will take from the grain offering a handful of the choice flour moistened with olive oil, together with all the frankincense. He will burn this representative portion on the altar as a pleasing aroma to the Lord. Aaron and his sons may eat the rest of the flour, but it must be baked without yeast and eaten in a sacred place within the courtyard of the Tabernacle. Remember, it must never be prepared with yeast. I have given it to the priests as their share of the special gifts presented to me. Like the sin offering and the guilt offering, it is most holy. Any of Aaron’s male descendants may eat from the special gifts presented to the Lord. This is their permanent right from generation to generation. Anyone or anything that touches these offerings will become holy.”

“ ‘And this is the regulation of the grain offering. Aaron’s sons shall present it before Yahweh in front of the altar, and he in his fist shall take away from it some of the grain offering’s finely milled flour, and some of its oil and all of the frankincense that is on the grain offering, and he shall turn into smoke its token portion on the altar as an appeasing fragrance to Yahweh. And Aaron and his sons must eat the remainder of it; they must eat it as unleavened bread in a holy place—in the tent of assembly’s courtyard they must eat it. It must not be baked with yeast. I have given it as their share from my offerings made by fire. It is a most holy thing, like the sin offering and like the guilt offering. Every male among Aaron’s sons may eat it as a lasting rule among your generations from the offerings made by fire belonging to Yahweh. Anything that touches them will become holy.’ ”

KJV 1900King James Version
And this is the law of the meat offering: the sons of Aaron shall offer it before the Lord, before the altar. And he shall take of it his handful, of the flour of the meat offering, and of the oil thereof, and all the frankincense which is upon the meat offering, and shall burn it upon the altar for a sweet savour, even the memorial of it, unto the Lord. And the remainder thereof shall Aaron and his sons eat: with unleavened bread shall it be eaten in the holy place; in the court of the tabernacle of the congregation they shall eat it. It shall not be baken with leaven. I have given it unto them for their portion of my offerings made by fire; it is most holy, as is the sin offering, and as the trespass offering. All the males among the children of Aaron shall eat of it. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations concerning the offerings of the Lord made by fire: every one that toucheth them shall be holy.
