Peace Offering Regulations: Animal from the Herd

3:1“ ‘Now if his offering is a peace offering sacrifice,1 if he presents an offering from the herd, he must present before the Lord a flawless male or a female.23:2He must lay his hand on the head of his offering and slaughter it at the entrance of the Meeting Tent, and the sons of Aaron, the priests, must splash the blood against the altar’s sides.33:3Then the one presenting the offering4 must present a gift to the Lord from the peace offering sacrifice: He must remove the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that surrounds the entrails,53:4the two kidneys with the fat on their sinews, and the protruding lobe on the liver (which he is to remove along with the kidneys).63:5Then the sons of Aaron must offer it up in smoke on the altar atop the burnt offering that is on the wood in the fire as a gift of a soothing aroma to the Lord.7

Footnotes

  1. 1 The peace offering sacrifice primarily enacted and practiced communion between God and man (and between the people of God). This was illustrated by the fact that the fat parts of the animal were consumed on the altar of the Lord but the meat was consumed by the worshipers in a meal before God. This is the only kind of offering in which common worshipers partook of the meat of the animal. When there was a series of offerings that included a peace offering (see, e.g., Lev 9:8–21, sin offerings, burnt offerings, and afterward the peace offerings in vv. 18–21), the peace offering was always offered last because it expressed the fact that all was well between God and his worshiper(s). There were various kinds of peace offerings, depending on the worship intended on the specific occasion. The “thank offering” expressed thanksgiving (e.g., Lev 7:11–15; 22:29–30), the “votive offering” fulfilled a vow (e.g., Lev 7:16–18; 22:21–25), and the “freewill offering” was offered as an expression of devotion and praise to God (e.g., Lev 7:16–18; 22:21–25). The so-called “ordination offering” was also a kind of peace offering that was used to consecrate the priests at their ordination (e.g., Exod 29:19–34; Lev 7:37; 8:22–32). See R. E. Averbeck, 1: and 4:.
  2. 2 Heb “if a male if a female, perfect he shall present it before the Lord.” The “or” in the present translation (and most other English versions) is not present in the Hebrew text here, but see v. 6 below.
  3. 3 See the remarks on above for some of the details of translation here.
  4. 4 Heb “Then he”; the referent (the person presenting the offering) has been specified in the translation for clarity (cf. the note on ).
  5. 5 Heb “and all the fat on the entrails.” The fat layer that covers the entrails as a whole (i.e., “that covers the entrails”) is different from the fat that surrounds and adheres to the various organs (“on the entrails,” i.e., surrounding them; J. Milgrom, Leviticus [], 1:).
  6. 6 Heb “and the protruding lobe on the liver on the kidneys he shall remove it.” Cf. “the appendage of the liver”; “the covering of the liver” ( “the caul above the liver”).
  7. 7 Or “on the fire—[it is] a gift of a soothing aroma to the Lord” (see Lev 1:13b, 17b, and the note on ).

NIVNew International Version (2011)

“ ‘If your offering is a fellowship offering, and you offer an animal from the herd, whether male or female, you are to present before the Lord an animal without defect. You are to lay your hand on the head of your offering and slaughter it at the entrance to the tent of meeting. Then Aaron’s sons the priests shall splash the blood against the sides of the altar. From the fellowship offering you are to bring a food offering to the Lord: the internal organs and all the fat that is connected to them, both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which you will remove with the kidneys. Then Aaron’s sons are to burn it on the altar on top of the burnt offering that is lying on the burning wood; it is a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

“If his offering is a fellowship sacrifice, and he is presenting an animal from the herd, whether male or female, he is to present one without blemish before the Lord. He is to lay his hand on the head of his offering and slaughter it at the entrance to the tent of meeting. Then Aaron’s sons the priests will splatter the blood on all sides of the altar. NLTNew Living Translation

“If you present an animal from the herd as a peace offering to the Lord, it may be a male or a female, but it must have no defects. Lay your hand on the animal’s head, and slaughter it at the entrance of the Tabernacle. Then Aaron’s sons, the priests, will splatter its blood against all sides of the altar. The priest must present part of this peace offering as a special gift to the Lord. This includes all the fat around the internal organs, the two kidneys and the fat around them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver. These must be removed with the kidneys, and Aaron’s sons will burn them on top of the burnt offering on the wood burning on the altar. It is a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord.

He must lay his hand on the head of his offering and slaughter it at the entrance of the tent of assembly, and Aaron’s sons the priests shall sprinkle the blood on the altar all around. He shall present from the sacrifice of the fellowship offering an offering made by fire for Yahweh consisting of the fat covering the inner parts and all the fat that is on the inner parts, the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is on the loins, and he must remove the lobe on the liver in addition to the kidneys. Aaron’s sons shall turn it to smoke on the altar in addition to the burnt offering that is on the wood, which is on the fire; it is an offering made by fire as an appeasing fragrance for Yahweh.
