The Benefits of Obedience

26:3“ ‘If you walk in my statutes and are sure to obey my commandments,426:4I will give you your rains in their time so that5 the land will give its yield and the trees of the field will produce their fruit.626:5Threshing season will extend for you until the season for harvesting grapes,7 and the season for harvesting grapes will extend until sowing season, so8 you will eat your bread until you are satisfied,9 and you will live securely in your land. 26:6I will grant peace in the land so that10 you will lie down to sleep without anyone terrifying you.11 I will remove harmful animals12 from the land, and no sword of war13 will pass through your land.

Read in Logos
Leviticus 26:3–4: ...If you walk in my statutes and observe my commandments and do them, then I will give you your rains in their season, and the land shall yield its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.

Footnotes

  1. 4 Heb “and my commandments you shall keep and do them.” This appears to be a kind of verbal hendiadys, where the first verb is a modifier of the action of the second verb (see §120.d, although שָׁמַר [shamar, “to keep”] is not cited there; cf. Lev 20:8; 25:18, etc.).
  2. 5 Heb “and.” The Hebrew conjunction ו (vav, “and”) can be considered to have resultative force here.
  3. 6 Heb “the tree of the field will give its fruit.” As a collective singular this has been translated as plural.
  4. 7 Heb “will reach for you the vintage season.”
  5. 8 Heb “and.” The Hebrew conjunction ו (vav, “and”) can be considered to have resultative force here.
  6. 9 Heb “to satisfaction”; , , “to the full.”
  7. 10 Heb “and.” The Hebrew conjunction ו (vav, “and”) can be considered to have resultative force here.
  8. 11 Heb “and there will be no one who terrifies.” The words “to sleep” have been supplied in the translation for clarity.
  9. 12 Heb “harmful animal,” singular, but taken here as a collective plural (so almost all English versions).
  10. 13 Heb “no sword”; the words “of war” are supplied in the translation to indicate what the metaphor of the sword represents.

I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid. And I will remove harmful beasts from the land, and the sword shall not go through your land.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

“ ‘If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees their fruit. Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want and live in safety in your land.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

“If you follow my statutes and faithfully observe my commands, I will give you rain at the right time, and the land will yield its produce, and the trees of the field will bear their fruit. Your threshing will continue until grape harvest, and the grape harvest will continue until sowing time; you will have plenty of food to eat and live securely in your land. I will give peace to the land, and you will lie down with nothing to frighten you. I will remove dangerous animals from the land, and no sword will pass through your land.

NLTNew Living Translation

“If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, I will send you the seasonal rains. The land will then yield its crops, and the trees of the field will produce their fruit. Your threshing season will overlap with the grape harvest, and your grape harvest will overlap with the season of planting grain. You will eat your fill and live securely in your own land.

“I will give you peace in the land, and you will be able to sleep with no cause for fear. I will rid the land of wild animals and keep your enemies out of your land.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

“ ‘If you walk in my statutes and you keep my commands and you do them, then I will give you rains in their time, and the land shall give its produce, and the trees of the field shall give their fruit.
