Read in Logos
Joshua 1:8: This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Footnotes

  1. 9 Heb “For you will cause these people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give to them.” The pronoun “them” at the end of the verse refers to either the people or to the fathers.
  2. 10 Or “Only be.”
  3. 11 Heb “so you can be careful to do.” The use of the infinitive לִשְׁמֹר (lishmor, “to keep”) after the imperatives suggests that strength and bravery will be necessary for obedience. Another option is to take the form לִשְׁמֹר as a vocative lamed (ל) with imperative (see Isa 38:20 for an example of this construction), which could be translated, “Indeed, be careful!”
  4. 12 Heb “commanded you.”
  5. 13 Heb “be wise,” but the word can mean “be successful” by metonymy.
  6. 14 Heb “in all which you go.”
  7. 15 Heb “mouth.” This law scroll must not leave your lips. The ancient practice of reading aloud to oneself as an aid to memorization is in view here.
  8. 16 Heb “read it in undertones,” or “recite it quietly” (see 1:).
  9. 17 Heb “be careful to do.”
  10. 18 Heb “you will make your way prosperous.”
  11. 19 Heb “and be wise,” but the word can mean “be successful” by metonymy.
  12. 20 Heb “Have I not commanded you?” The rhetorical question emphasizes the importance of the following command by reminding the listener that it is being repeated.
  13. 21 Or perhaps, “don’t get discouraged!”
  14. 22 Heb “in all which you go.”

Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

CSBChristian Standard Bible

“Be strong and courageous, for you will distribute the land I swore to their ancestors to give them as an inheritance. Above all, be strong and very courageous to observe carefully the whole instruction my servant Moses commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right or the left, so that you will have success wherever you go. This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to meditate on it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do. Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

NLTNew Living Translation
